have u guys heard/know of similar products? Just trying to gauge how vodafone established the R749 pricing...

MTN will be launching theirs tomorrow, so we'll see what they charge.

What is the point of giving unconnected FAMILIES a 100MB limit? If they are unconnected, it's probably because they cannot afford an internet connection to begin with.

So now let's give a poor family a way to connect to the internet, but no data to do it with. Then lets sell them the data at R280 per Gig.

Vodascum sucks!

Why not create a bundle like the Cell C has done. 5Gigs a month for R300 or something similar. This at least would be something worth the money an unconnected family would have to pay.

Some cell phones have more capabilities than this piece of microprocessor in a box scam.

WTF are you supposed to do with 100MB of data? Oh wait... via EDGE/GPRS that could last you a while.

Do you think the Vodacom WebBox will increase Internet access in South Africa?

Yes - many will have Internet access theoretically but 100Mb won't last you the first hour of excitement and then what?
I can see many a poor family loosing more than what they have bargained for when it comes to Vodacom.

Not even a day... let alone three months

Exactly. I was being sarcastic :p

I think they should really re-think these 'great ideas' they come up with. It's clear they're in it for a quick buck. Sell a couple thousand useless keyboards and someone gets a new Porsche.

It's a load of crap if you ask me and it just confirms what VC think of the general public.

Hmmm, I wonder if it can be wooooshed? Anyone have hardware specs?

If Vodacon was sincerely catering for the poor, they could have easily proposed a R60 p/m unlimited on device internet browsing experience, Blackberry BIS style. But Nooooooooooooo they would never, and as I've alluded to before, they not catering for the poor, they are TARGETING the poor!!

You've taken the words out of my mouth.

WTF is wrong with this corporate. 100MB Data

Dead On Arrival, R749 is too expensive for what this device offers and how will poor households afford the data. P4 PC's are like a R1000 now and then you could use your phone as a modem when ever you need to connect.

Poor souls getting poorer... What a waste of money! Shame on you Vodacom.

Now if Trevor Noah can just step up and give the poor a Box for R 750 and 2Gb per month @ R 100, now the poor can start doing something on the internet. Maybe 1Gb @ R 75, this at least allows some web browsing for school assignments and basic email capabilities.

For that money I'd rather encourage a newby to settle for a fully functional used P3 / P4 system readily available in the 2nd hand market. Such low-cost PC eliminates all the negatives mentioned in the article, is capable of connecting to the internet via various USB devices operating on a pre-paid basis as well (including the notorious cellular 100 MB!) and still offer all the other functionality typical of a PC.

Most probably something that failed in Europe and now being dumped in Africa.

Vodacom = Vodafone's failed product dumping ground

The WebBox uses Operamini. I use opers mini on my pc using a cell phone emulater and us between 15 and 30 meg per month.
