Morning Peeps :p

I went past the vodashop in Fourways and signed up for the Vodacom 24 month contract.

I asked about the E272, but none of the shop staff recognized the name. They said they had previously had the E220 (which was out of stock), and the new modem was the MC950D.

1) The MC950D is a usb stick modem, Will I have problems with reception on it? I havent connected it yet as I was advised 4-24 hours for activation. I was quite keen on the E272 as it could have an external antenna. When I was installing the MC950D stick last night I was only getting 3 bars connectivity..

2) The shop attendent told me the R50 for the upgrade to 3.6mbs only applied to people who had voice and data on their package, and used the cellphones to connect to the 3g network. I specifically asked about that and he said as I just had the data contract I would receive the speed upgrade at no cost. --- Now this is not what I have understood from the forums, can anyone clarify this for me?

I appreciate all the help!! :D

I remember reading a post last week about Vodashop Fourways having E272 modems on some contract special with a ZAR250.00 pay-in...

I think that was my post. I went past there and they told me about a new modem that was due in. When I asked here on the forum, the peeps in the know thought it was the E272 (at that stage the sales people didnt have the name for it).

Now it turns out to be the MC950D. I want to find out if I should be tryign to exchange the MC950D modem for the E272...

the MC950D looks pretty mean though.......

Aha, how do Option & Huawei compare with Novatel as far as developer-friendliness is concerned?
I believe TazzTux got some documentation from Huawei, and Option have stuff freely available on their website. The diagnostic interfaces on cards from both of those manufacturers use a standard AT command interface, whereas Novatel have a proprietary interface.

I was also told the MC950D is the newest modem. But what they told me was 3.6MBS is automatically enabled with this modem. Wasn;t asked to pay in anything. This was at Incredible Connection Cape Town.

I recently bought a Novatel MC950D USB modem, having previously used my Nokia 6110 Navigator as a modem with a Poynting antenna to boost reception. Out of desparation because of poor reception, I placed the cellphone adaptor under the Novatel modem. To my surprise I discovered that the cellphone adaptor for the antenna (Poynting ADPT-A024) boosted the signal to HSDPA, saving me the trouble and expense to buy an adaptor for the Novatel modem.

Should work. The adapter acts like a mini-repeater so will boost the signal for any device if coupled with a high-gain, externally mounted antenna.

Always better to get a direct connection to the modem but if this is not available the inductive couplers is your only bet.
