So I took my trusty lil E 90 in for a software upgrade (the first ever in 2 years) because all sorts of wierd stuff has being happening on the device, things like freezing and memory full etc. Paid just short of R200 and two hours later I'm none the wiser. Problems still there. Ah they say, faulty memory card, but removing it deprives me of my garmin and other installations but it clears the problem for a short while. Now the problems back and I still have no memory card, no garmin. Vodacare shunted me off to the 3G store to download all my sms (hundreds) but 3G don't have any hardware and say I can't copy my sms to disc and bounced me back to vodacare Anyway, what do I do now? Vodacare canal walk haven't a clue. Said I must contact service provider for new memory card with embedded programs but I still need copies of everything...and that still doesn't solve the phone problem which is insured btw.

try defragmenting the memory card - connect the phone to a pc as a mass storage device and defrag the card.

what other specific problems are you having?

Nokia's generally have about 50 to 100mb of base memory and then an external card.
The OS needs some free base memory to run smoothly or else it will keep freezing etc.
Check that you havent filled up the base memory with applications, music, documents etc.
Try to free up some memory by moving things over to the memory card (after defragging).
Uninstall unnecessary apps from the phone and reinstall to the memory card.
Also, because the symbian platform is open, there's often no quality control with many apps, so resource conflicts, memory leaks, etc from a particular app may be causing the problem.
If you can remember, get the phone to the state it was in when it had no problems, by removing all apps you put on after it gave you trouble.
Then reinstall each one and systematically eliminate the one/s that might be causing problems.

Its a common problem with symbian, all my old s60 phones eventually get temperamental. It because, like a pc, the platform is open and you constantly install and uninstall apps which leaves all sorts of dead files and registry entries in the phone's memory. This eventually leads to problems.

As a last resort, back up your contacts, sms, calender entries (using nokia pc suite). Copy your pictures and vids to a pc, remove your memory card, and format the phone.
I think the code is *#7780# (not sure, google it)
This should get you back to a clean, fresh os.
Again, evaluate all the apps you put back on to eliminate the problem one/s

If all thats too much for you, sell it, buy something else and move on

:D Thanks. I think it's time to put this poor carthorse out to pastur, sorry, the bin. But I'll take your suggestion and defrag the card first. Beyond that, alas, it's too much hassle:)
