I saw that clicks has this phone on special for R799.99

Wow what a bargain. R800 for a android phone 3G that can be rooted overclocked and install decent android apps!

Just a heads up. I could not find stock at any store close to me. :( Seems they are going fast.

EDIT: Its actually R698 for the phone now. Even more of a bargain!

nice!

thanks for posting! that's an absolutely amazing price. my trusty samsung e250's arrow keys stopped responding last week so this could be the answer. i'll go and check the centurion clicks tomorrow.

in case there's no stock, anybody else know of similar prices anywhere else? alternative phones even?

try get clicks to get one from another branch?

cavedog, have you tried asking your local clicks branch if they can't request stock from one of the branches that does have stock?

i spoke to the store manager and he did a search on their computer, showed up which branches in gauteng had stock and then i just drove over there. have you tried that in your area? might be a long drive, but for that kind of a bargain, might be worthwhile!

all in all i'm incredibly pleased with this phone, the touchscreen is resistive and the resolution is only 320x240, those are the only drawbacks i have seen so far. The phone is quick to respond and has run all the apps i've thrown at it thus far(but i've only had it for 1day! so it's not many!) on the screen resolution issue, it's the same resolution as the htc wildfire so any apps that run on the wildfire resolution should theoretically run on the v845 as well.

things that really stand out for me:
-the loudspeaker quality is really good(for a phone) but i mean hot damn it's better than a lot of little clock radio type "hi-fi's"! it's really truly good enough that you won't mind listening to music on it.
-the fact that it runs android means that you can get all the apps you need!
-the stock browser is quite good and the 3g picks up better signal than my previous phone so that's great, and it works on cellc's whooosh network(although i still have to figure out how to get my cellphone number onto my whoosh(5gb) sim)
-it supports the slideit keyboard which is similar to swype where you type by sliding between the keys not pressing them, makes typing super simple and fast
-but yeah, best of all is the price.
-overnight my phone used 4% battery in standby so by my maths that means it'll last just over a full week on standby(better than e250) but obviously heavy app usage will kill that batterylife.

if you can get hold of this phone, just do it, for R700 how much of a mistake can you really make?! think of it this way, that's cheaper than a gps standalone and this phone has gps built in!

actually i'm going to use the gps to get me to university on monday(even though i should know the way after 4 years!)

oh yes, it's NOT network locked, even thought clicks swears blind that it is.

^^^^^ Maybe I should try that.

Ohh and yes. All stores say that the phones are network locked. I once said to the person that you know that it is illegal to network lock a phone in SA. He was like uhmmmm.

Not 1 phone is network locked in SA anymore. Not even the vodafone branded ones.

Ohh my God. I found 1. Yes yes yes. I found one and bought it for R698.

What a head ache though. They didn't want to give it to me cause their system to rica was offline. So I had to go to another store to rica the sim card I got from clicks and then went back to clicks to get the phone. But I got it. And the last one too. Nothing in my area left. All finished.

awesome!

so glad you got one cavedog! how are your first impressions? as positive as mine i hope!

I'm going to laugh at all my friends with desire hd's tomorrow! smartphone for R700 is the way to go!

i also tried the whole "it's illegal to network lock in south africa" bit, but the saleslady still laughed to my face when i said i was going to use cellc! the REALLY strange bit is that she claimed that people had returned this very phone claiming that it was network locked? what sort of sales strategy is this?

Well to be honest I have a HTC Desire too. But I wanted this phone cause in my line of work phones might get damaged. So I wanted a cheap decent phone and never stopped looking for this vodafone 845 since they announced it http://mybroadband.co.za/news/cellular/14468-Cheapest-Android-smartphone.html

This phone is superb. The screen is a let down and coming from a HTC desire its quite noticable. But it has exceeded my expectations for a R700 phone. HSDPA 3.2 decent camera and android.

I rooted the phone straight away within 20min I got home with it. So I guess the warranty is gone but I don't care cause its such a awesome phone when you install a custom rom and clock the cpu a bit. The performance you get from this cheap smartphone is quite enjoyable. Love it too bits. I have been playing with it the whole afternoon while my desire is somewhere in the house.

This phone is a MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT:
Ohh and almost forgot. I play angry birds on the device and it works fine. I only had it like lag a little when lots of stuff was falling and happening together, maybe its just the RAM thats so less. But I bought a 4Gb memory card and the phone is LOADED with apps!

Its really a pity we don't get ZTE phones in South Africa well not via the service providers cause if we did the ZTE Blade would be about R1100 for a much better device. But still you have to admit R700 for GPS/MP3/WWW is not bad at all.

internet access in applications?

ok so here's my first tiny problem with this phone. i can access internet perfectly fine through the browser on the phone, no problems there, so we can assume that the 3g is working on the device.

The problem is that whenever i try to load an application that requires internet, it doesn't see that the phone has an internet connection, this happens in maps, whatsapp, gmail, talk, etc, etc, i have yet to be able to connect to the internet using ANY application except for the browser. any ideas?

i did find an obscure post somewhere on some vodafone forums (UK) where they talked about it being "child lock" or "age lock" some such nonsense? and that the only way to fix it would be to go to a vodafone shop and have them "unlock the age" or something. sounds a bit dodgy to me!

yup, angry birds runs fine!(not sure why people play it though lol?) in any case, u can if you want. do you know of a "teeter" type game that works on this phone? seems that "teeter" itself is only for htc phones.

i need to get myself an sd card for this phone, kalahari has 4gb's for R59 but shipping says 8days+, any good cheap-ish local(gauteng, centurion) places?

oh yes, can you get compass apps to work? i can't, i'm guessing that the phone doesn't have a built-in compass...

cavedog, which rom have you loaded onto your phone now? links maybe?

I bought this phone today. I wanted the RBM HD from Cell C, but I didn't want to sign a 2 year contract with them.

So I took the plunge and bought my first Android phone at Clicks for R699. If you are in the south of JHB and want to get yourself one, there's 2 left.

One on display and one in the box. Location: Columbine Square, cnr Columbine and Swartgoud, opposite Mc Donalds in Suideroord, before Mondeor.

It's going to take awhile to figure things around, so if I encounter problems, I'll ask here.

Sent from an Android n00b.

i'm an idiot!

ok so my internet is working fine in apps now. i think that because i only set up the internet: http://online.freeware.info.pl/gry-sieciowe.html after the phone was turned on for the first time, it didn't register with the apps for some reason, as soon as i turned the phone off and then on again all apps have access to the internet no problems! lol!

Madhawk, welcome to the 845 club! let us know how you get on and what apps you install etc.

i also considered getting the rmb, not the hd, the cheaper one, but yeah, i didn't REALLY want a new contract and prepaid was like R3,5k or so... i think the 845 was the better choice for me.

Trust me you can LOAD this phone and still get decent performance from it. The screen is a let down but for the selling price what can you expect. Feature wise it is jam packed. Damn! GPS,Wifi, bluetooth,Memory card,3.2mbps 3G, 3.2MP Camera, Android apps,Youtube music and a memory card slot.

I find the keyboard too small to type on whatsapp and messaging. I am battling to type and I am not even fat. ( I have calibrated 3 times now)

Also you really have to press down to get any response or sometimes a light touch takes you somewhere else.

Basically comes back to the screen. If you had a better touch screen the keyboard wouldn't have been a problem. :)

Hey guys i see the Vodaphone 945 is coming soon any idea what that handset is going to cost or when its coming as im thinking of getting this phone now and handing it to my symbian loving wife if the 945 is a decent price.
No more contracts for me + Android = FTW:D
