Heading off downunder for xmas, and thought I'd bring along my e220 and not sponge free internet off my brothers and sisters. Checked Vodafone Australia's prepaid data rates... AUS$0.01 per KB. That's AUS$10.24 per meg, or ZAR R65.00 per meg.

Guess what? Family had better have wireless routers for my lappie, 'cos the e220 staying right here in SA.

Optus - 500Mb = $50
3 - does something cheaper but is only cities covered i think.
Telstra NextG - need to buy starter pack inc modem $150..then $50 will get u 600Mb

Thanks for that. I see on the optus site it's actually $30 for 1 Gig! WTF is going on in Vodafone's minds??? I didn't see any bundle options on their site, but then it is a bit confusing and I was in a hurry.

From the Optus site:

"Alternatively, if you have an approved modem already and you just want to get connected, then our Pre-Paid SIM starter kit will get you on your way. For $30 you receive 1GB data allowance, 15 free national calls and text and an Optus SIM Card."

Yeah prepaid's all pretty new over there compared to here.
When i checked last Vodafone never even had prepaid without going into a 24 month modem contract.
Virgin was similar.
Telstra's NextG has been only available on prepaid maybe 2 months now.
Optus piggybacks onto vodafone network so coverage is pretty good + it uses same band as here.Sunshine Coast it was a pain tho and i went & bought one of the Telstra packs.
Telstra's coverage is probably the best and worked better but it means modem expense to use 850Mhz band.
3 - I think they had pretty reasonable rates but will depend largely where your going.

For optus this is what i was using here

Telstra prepaid here

Details for "3" "byo modem" here (they don't have large network coverage )

Great tip - thanks. Was going to try and ask on the Whirlpool forums, but Oz sites seem to be dead slow today.

OK, unashamed bump, but call it feedback. Connected to Optus 3g here in Australia. Good coverage, and good speeds. Limited to 1.8. Surprising how MyBB loads about as fast from here in Australia as back in ZA.

From the little bit of shopping I had to do to find a straight pre-paid sim and 1 gig data bundle, 3g (They call it wireless here) is pretty new. Tried optus, telstra, virgin, and 3 's official outlets - none had the $30 straight sim and 1gig package in stock. Found Joe Schmoes' "you Beaut foneshop" and he asks: "Yeah - how many you want?"

Stupid thing is, you have to go to the website to activate the sim before it will connect - bit of a donkey before the carrot. Had to find a phone line and dial up to get connected. No number, pin, or apn details in the package. They mail it to you only after you register - for which you need internet connectivity. They definitely need to rethink that stupid process.

BTW, hi def digital TV is absolutely awesome. It makes mnet look like you tube @ 800 x 600 in 16 colours.:D
