Vodafone sizes up Telkom

Fixed-line operator Telkom has been described as “affordable” at its current value of R72-billion.
R72BN  is not exactly profitable. How do they expect to get a return on their investment with competition closing in. Probably want to buy the rest of Vodacom which is still good. Maybe they will offer us data at R200/gig which would then make them the cheapest provider and the rest would have to follow. *me holding thumbs* Since things are already at their worst they can only get better from here on out.

With any luck other big players (virgin? ;) ) will get in on the action and buy chunks of Telkom from Vodafone and establish chunks as smaller, more effective telecoms providers.
I don't see that happening even if Vodafone buys them. Part of Telkom's attraction is most probably that they are a fully licensed telecoms provider and the license probably can't be transferred in part or broken up. So it would no longer be worth as much without also owning the rest of Telkom.

Vodafone...Telkom

Who knows what the outcome will be, maybe for better , maybe for worse, can it be worse than what we have now with Telkom?...Time will tell and that remains to be seen if anything happens at all...

Well in the UK or USA, to them 15pounds/30 Dollars for Uncapped 6megabit line is too much.. If the they do buy out Telkom i think they will invest and upgrade our the Network. I doubt if the pricing will be similar to the UK/US rates. But they won't let ADSL service stay as it is at the moment, and they will propably change the capped deals, and also change the network to a speed of what they consider to be true broadband.

damn, imagine 2 Mbps uncapped unshapped internet for R100 pm all inclusive!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

/me wakes up

I don't know why everyone thinks this is a good thing. I'm still thinking about it, though at this stage to me it looks BAD BAD BAD for us.
if it's true it's good becos gvt will give up its stake in telkom.

anyway, it probably won't be a complete buyout if it is true, one or all of the BEE consortiums will likely retain their share.

What worries me is potential backdoor deals in this.

Govt: "Sure vodafone, have our shares."
Vodafone: "Why are you letting go so easily? What you planning on doing? Promise us you won't liberalise for a while!!"
Govt: "Ag ja well no fine. Ok then, no more liberalisation for a bit".

Can't you just see it happening?

yup, but since they invested in the sno they'd free up some assets telkom has(if they sold all their shares). I doubt Telkom will turn around and offer cheap service if bought, people in charge retain positions + they'd obviously want some return on investment asap like most(vodafone).

yeah, but where else they gonna pick up a set Telecoms co that can rip the consumer to the degree telkom does? even if telkom cuts its prices in half they will still show massive profits - and profit is what vodafone is after...

DSL comes first over the price of cheap Lube, bring on the spit!.

How is that a plus  That's like saying it's better to be raped lying flat than being raped doggy-style.

Well, the situation is like this: (and you can't say "Neither") Which would you prefer,,,... Spit or nothing... ... ... :D

At this point, arnt we glad its still speculation... lets see what comes from this :)

IMO, VodaFony Might do the opposite that we think... "Spit"... Virgin (arnt you glad i spat) is here and again we're holding our breaths... There's something about a cable in Kenya, its a matter of time we might run some wires over the road (that will make telkom happy) and sort out our international connectivity, and even if we don't dig up the road (that permission thread is so old) all the way to kenya, the Safe cable might bail us out sometime nextyear or the year after that or not at all...

... Hang on... HAIRBALL

... OH my, all this speculation - maybe this reporter was sitting nearby Ivy after one of her Doughnut fests, listening to her mumbling in her sleep!.

Govt will only sell if its in their best interests.

I sincerely doubt they'll sell the Telskommel share part they have and it'll most likely only be the vodacon arm they're willing to lop off (for a cool chunk of change, some nice beemers and trips to dubai for shopping, some kool jets and new homes for all family members and obscure distant relatives of their mothers, uncles ,cousins, sisters, neighbour).

Like Sabc, Eskom, Spoornet, Telkom is another govt excuse to exist. Without parastatals theyre meaningless, powerless and broke. Its like kicking your employed family out of the house whom you mooch off since you don't work yourself. Its suicide.

If Vodafone buys out Telkom, they buy out a huge piece of Vodacom too... Meaning they basically almost buy out the entire telecommunications of SA?? Except for MTN, (Cellc/Virgin Mobil uses Vodacom too)

In the old days of school beatings, you were told to bend over and touch your toes..... now it looks like we will have to bend over and touch tomorrow

Spare me the little forks

Sorry but I don't see that happening in my crystal ball, it's too lucrative for them. But then again it can only see 10 years forward. :D

I was thinking more in the line of sending them some beaners. :D
/me whistles like nothing has happened

All I can say is that if Vodafone take over Telkom then I cant wait tills the merger is complete. In all honesty Government and the existing Telkom brand will dissapear. Vodafone branding will kick in place. They'll align themselves with all their international branches (Pricing, Packages, Roaming, etc.....) and they'll make a killing. They have the technology, deffinately the money, skills, other markets to connect to, etc...

Personally I think this would be the greatest thing that ever happened to our Telecom Industry. But on the other hand its probaly going to take like another 2 years to sort out.

As they said it... AFRICA hasnt shipped yet. Dont be surprised that other international telecom companies dont put bids in. Were talking international stage.

Anyways lets see what happens. Personally we've got nothing to loose by letting another company in under a different brand. I am sure screwing will go on. But we'll see. That will also give the SNO MTN, Cell C something to think About. Dont be surprised that MTN and Cell C disappear of the market altogether or bought out buy other players.

Something smells rotten here...

Daar is 'n slang in die gras hierso...

and I don't like this announcement...

Is Vodafone trying to entrench itself as another monopoly? Because if it buys Teklom, then it'll have Vodacom as well as Telkom, two of the biggest, in SA...

No way, I still think there is something shady going on here...
