Hi everyone

I have a Vodafone mobile modem, that I use with my Vodacom sim card to provide wifi in my house to laptops, ipad, etc.

When I put a 8ta sim card in, it shows it has signal, but wont connect. Why is this?

Thanks in advance

Wifi from the modem? Or modem plugged into PC USB port? You get more help if providing model number.

Have you got something like the R205 modem router that you want yo use? Unfortunately as I understand these devices are network locked and this was confirmed by the sales assistant at game... But you can flash it with generic firmware which should unblock it.

Thanks for the replies.

The model number is huawei HB4F1.

Does anyone have any experience with this model?

Isn't this illegal to have the devices network locked? I have the R205, considering another SIM, as Vodacom is just too expensive

I think you are reading HB4F1 off the battery - that is the battery model number in my router. The device itself is a model R205 Vodafone Mobile Wi-Fi from Huawei Tech Co.

I have exactly the same question as yourself - I was trying to use my friend's 8.ta SIM card to see if he could get a similar device from Vodacom to use with his new laptop.

Can someone confirm if these devices are sim-locked or not ? Is it illegal to sim-lock them as some people seem to suggest ?

I've been wondering the same for a few months - logic would imply it's illegal for them to be locked, as they're using SIM cards, like cell / smartphones. But, knowing these operators :(

According to the ladies at game Northgate the modem is indeed network locked. I would classify it as soft-network locked as I am 90% sure if you were to flash it with generic network software you would be good to go.

Ok, after some looking around, these devices are all networked locked. HOWEVER, you don't need to flash it to some other firmware to get past it. Apparently (I haven't tried it), you put the other network SIM in the device, and it will take you to an unlock page. At this point you need to enter an unlock code ... Google "Universal Mastercode" :D
