So lekker seeing the life up there. Few similarities in Singapore besides the snow keep us updated!
 
I'd give anything to live in any of the Scandinavian countries - the people and way of life there is so awesome. And, I like cold, especially that white stuff:D

I've only been there once, doing a city tour while waiting for my connecting flight. Changi is without a doubt the coolest airport in the world.

It was hot as balls, but I enjoyed their street vendor ice cream sammiches. :D
 
Those views look amazing. But I doubt anyone who hasn't experienced anything lower than -10 (South Africans) can really appreciate how cold -30 really is. Hope I can test it out someday.
 
-30 actually in some respects can feel warmer than -20. Had a mate climb everest and he explained it to me. Said that at -20 you still have trace amount of moisture in the air which makes it feel cold. At -30 that is gone so the air is drier making it more comfortable. No personal experience with that as my lowest temp was about -5 with a windchill that probably made it feel like -10 but even that was crazy cold for me. Not sure I ever want to try compare -20 to -30. Would be interested to hear if Voicy agrees with my climber friends opinion.

Looks like you settling in nicely. What you doing for holiday's? Coming back to SA or touring EU?

Regarding your work, looks like most the engines is MTU and Easy Gen controllers?

Thanks bud, need to sort out my work permit this year before I can make any plans about holidays, but I'm keen to bring the mrs for a tour of SA. However I badly need to go diving again. :(

Those big ones are all mitsubishis, biggest I've worked with were 2x 2250kVAs and 3 1600kVAs in parallel... and yeah we use quite a few EasyGens. I prefer them over DeepSea in terms of flexibility, but the serial port interface annoys me to no end. Luckily the new XT models have loads of new toys to interface with. :)

Yeah I've noticed the same. Although I must add that if there's no wind, then the temperature really isn't an issue. I often walk outside with just my work T shirt on if I'm just going from the car to shops or such. If it's a cold rainy day with +2 and lots of wind then it's way colder than a snowy -35 day.

The thing with the cold here is that it's a refreshing coldness and the houses all have double insulation so it's always warm inside, unlike SA where if it's +5 outside, it's +5 inside too. But yeah, there have been times where I'm so cold from working outside that when I get home I go sit down in my shower and just sort of thaw out while feeling sorry for myself. Luckily a warm cup of coffee and 2minutes on news24.com fixes that feeling quickly. :crylaugh:

EDIT: Btw, please let me know if there's something in particular you guys would rather have me write about. Like I said at the very start of this thread, the last thing I want to do is make this look like a show-off blog and I think I've been here long enough to forget what might be considered interesting back in SA.

Thanks Voicey! Stuff I would like to know about is what are the locals like. Especially the stuff that is different. What do you find suprising or silly in them and vice versa (ie where culture is just different in interesting or funny ways). Also curious how different the cuisine is. What do you eat up there and what is cheap and local vs expensive and imported, vs impossible to get (Boereworse I am guessing)

Hey team,

As mentioned, last week I went to Svalbard to do the thing. The last time I was there in December it was permanently dark, so much so that you could see stars as if it was 2am. This time around the sun was shining quite strong at "midnight" but with tons of snow around it looked quite pretty. Strange place.

I think this is where snowmobiles migrate to in order to mate and reproduce every year because they're EVERYWHERE.
