VoIP a disruptive technology for Telkom

Telkom’s CEO, Papi Molotsane, has noted that VoIP is a disrupting technology that has to be watched carefully but also welcomed. "We need to embrace these types of technologies," said Molotsane.
WTF is this guy smoking? We need to embrace it that's why we shape the crap out of it. Yeah that makes alot of sense

Well have to see how Telkom handles these things... if they were smart, they'd jump on the VoIP wagon really quickly and bring out some serious quality offerings now while they still can.

rpm... don't you ever sleep? :D

Isn't the problem with VOIP, termination on Telkom's network - you're basically not allowed to do it? Or are you allowed to do it , but still have to pay Telkom's rates?
What about the costs with making cell phone "calls", since 80% of the population has a cellphone over a land-line (with 0.5% broadband penetration..etc etc etc).

Is there a benefit of getting a VOIP phone at this stage or not (I guess that's what it boils down to)? No I'm not a business :p, just a residentialite :D

Hi AntiThesis

I did nod off in a departmental meeting the other day…does that count? :D I do find it a bit easier in the mornings if I do updates now for tomorrow…can be a bit of a rush in the mornings…

It will be interesting to see what Telkom is going to do about residential VoBB offerings. If they start losing revenue they will have to tap into it, but with services like Skype around it will not be easy to compete... Interesting times.

Regards,

RPM

the only positive thing about high prices on calls.... I don't pay for phonecalls at work... my phone at home isnt plugged in, i tell everybody my phone is faulty!. If people really want to talk to me, they can call me on my cell, and because they know its so DAMN expensive to sit on the phone and make small talk, they don't talk long - PEACE AND QUIET - just the way i like it. so VIOP to you too : )

I suppose that kinda counts rpm :p

I sometimes wonder if all Telkom really needs is a third party to decide protocol/policy for them. Take VoIP for example. We know it's a viable market and we know that priced correctly it could make an absolute ton of cash. Has Telkom decided to help South Africa bridge our ever widening digital divide? Nope. Even though this would generate extra traffic/cash for them and effectively score some nice points with those of us who already use the technology.

Of course now I'm going to go right ahead and fall asleep during my exam tomorrow :D

Unfortunately Telkom do not understand the idea of proactive thinking. If they did this forum probably would not exist!

Telkom's modus operandi is that of spoiling the game for all other players and of taking as much immediate profit as possible. Even at the expense of future business. Telkom has been the sole controller of its business space for so long that it thinks it is invincible. Not a good business plan.

I wonder why Telkom installed all those soft switches (VoIP) the other day?
Papi either doesn't know whats in the network, or is trying a slight a hand.

For the quality of service on VoIP to be acceptable a broadband connection is required.

Thanks for the great article.

Just wanted to point out that with the proliferation of "web activated calls" this is not longer the case. All that is needed is any internet connection - dial up / gprs - will do fine.

Once set up one can make a voip call using your existing telkom line ( a voip/pstn gateway connection is used at each end of the call).

You can call many countries for as little as R0.08/min.

This needs to get out to the masses!!

Hi guys must say this is a gr8 site, very informative and for the people. I have a question..Is it possible to use skype or voip using ur cellphone? I mean its got a gprs connection:confused: Any info would be much appreciated

I don't think its that he doesn't know whats it his network.. he knows, he knows its saving them alot :P And they simply don't relay prices down to consumer cause well.. who else you gonna go to(for local call termination)?
I notice the influx of international carrier services recently.. makes me wonder if they use voip for international + telkom plan for local share/free calls.

Papi and Telkom are too stupid and too greedy to realise that making ADSL pricing affordable (NOT MORE AFFORDABLE) would increase their revenue where they would loose out on Voice Telecoms revenue. Sad thing is, is that the (also) too stupid and too greedy Government is allowing them to exploit the SA public.

Sad situation, I tell you!

Grrrrrrrreat Idea.

So do this.....
MYADSL has...what? x amount of users right?
Start a campaign and do someting about this issue.
MYADSL should promote to all their users the use of VOIP and MYADSL'ers should share this info with as many of their friends as possible.
It won't cost you a penny!

How long is MYADSL going to sit on it's arse and do little.
Start thinking and start doing!

Daveogg interesting info, like the R0.08/min part! Super that it's in black and white or I may have thought I had dreamt up that figure.

One way they can counter this is to make international calls cheaper and local expensive...

oops, now I've given them ideas...

Call S.A for 10-13cents a minute.

Vist www.voipbuster.com

They compete with skype, so all there call rates are much cheaper.

they also offer free calls to a minimum of 50 countries,of which these countries change every so often.

At one stage USA mobile was free.
