I had a Billion Router from Mweb where I configured my Mweb Voip details and then just plugged in a normal phone into the router.
That router is now damaged and I need to get another similar modem/router.
All the places (Makro, Matrix Warehouse) I check don't stock such a product. Can anyone advise me what's a good router/modem for Voip as well. I prefer not using softphone software.

Based in Gauteng- what are your prices for the routers?

I have a few Billion 7404VGO's available. They have 2 Voip ports, so you could use 2 phones if you like. I would accept R500 per a unit. postage will be about R30.

The Billion router is a good product available from Nology Distribution. You will find that Voip routers, ie a router with FXS port to plug in you analogue Phone are more expensive than the basic DSL router. You may want to just get yourself a desktop IP phone and use a cheap non VoIP router. You say that the router is damaged, is it just the FXS port ? Is it still working for data ? If it is you may use the same router as the MWeb SIP account will live in the phone and not the router.

no it's not working for data-it's completely stuffed. I considered the cheap router and desktop phone but I prefer the VOIP router option.
@fartymarty thanks bro but R500 is steep for a second hand unit.

There is one last option if you got a smart phone, use a Wi-Fi router and free SIP client in the phone. Your cell phone becomes your home phone.

R500 is actually a good price...i think for new, they're over R2500 retail...

Why don't you ask Matrix to get you a Billion 7404VGO? Then you can make an informed decision.

Matrix staff were not very helpful.
Actually trying someone else.
Thanks for the help guys.

Regarding the SIP client- which one is recommended.

I presume you are talking of the SIP client for a smart phone, let me know what phone you have and I can recommend for you.

Thanks I have a Touch HD with Win Mobile 6.1 (ancient I know :) )

Don't knowif I set it up correctly:
Provider name: sip.mweb.net
user acount: 2787XXXXXXX
Password: XXXX
Registrart Address: 2787XXXXXXXX Port: 5060 UDP
Proxy address- blank

URI Address: Mweb said leave it blank but it automatically fills in
sip:2787XXXXXX@2787XXXXX

my wifi is on but I keep getting the error "no service"
I do have credit on my account.

I presume you are using similar as ' VOIP WM6.1 SIP Config ' im not to familiar with this CAB but look at this. the registrar address should be sip.mweb.net: 5060 or 196.28.95.12: 5060. not 2787xxxxxxxxxx !
With regards to Wi-Fi make sure the router is enabled and the phone is set to look for Wi-FI. Do all of this without security or Mac filters, once all is working ok, set up the WPA & Mac filters ! Dont forget to do this.

ok I got it selected but can't make calls. I keep getting the error that the number is incorrect. I tried using +2711XXXXX, 2711XXXX, 011XXXX but nothing works. It may have something to do with the dial plan settings which I tried changing but with no luck.
Is there another CAB you can suggest?

This is a question you need to ask MWeb, each provider is a little different. Ask them what they want to receive and ask for a SIP trace, the trace will show if you are actually sending anything to them and what. If they are not receiving anything we need to look at the CAB a bit harder.

Thanks for your help bro but I hit a dead end with Mweb. They don't even know what the registrar address is- I give up.

I can create a temporary Voip account for you that i know all the info for and you can try that, at least it will prove if the CAB is OK.

Let me know and i can PM it to you

Thanks bro- I think the problem is the Dial Plan settings on the software. I cannot change anything as it reverts to these settings:
International prefix: 00
Countryt code: 31
Area prefix : 0
Allow local numbers remains unticked.
I tried changing and soft restarting but nothing works.
My Mweb sip status is active though.

I don't want to hassle you to create an account if it means I need to change the Dial plan settings cos that's not possible.

Thanks- It keeps getting an error with the registration. For sip do I just enter sip.mweb.net or an IP or what?
I tried sip.mweb.net for sip details as wells as [email protected]
My user name i used 2787XXXX
and my usual mtalk password.

edit: I used 196.28.95.12 and it worked lekker... Thanks so much bro- much appreciated.
