VoIp for home

Hi guys

Im new to voip and I have a few questions which im hoping you can help me with:

I have ADSL and I want to convert to a cheaper option of making calls. I dont want to use the PC because my mom is a bit behind in that department.

Is there a phone that plugs directly into my home lan and then works like a normal phone except via adsl?

Skype Dual Phone + Skype out...

Otional:
Normal phone with a "skype box".. you set up speed dials to use.. then number you phone is eg. *1#

Get a SIP telephone adapter then you can plug your normal phones (coreless or not) in.

Then use any sip provider: lowratevoip or voipbuster or google for one.

yes, it works, but not that practical, leaving your PC on 24/7 100% uptime is not practical. ATAs just work, plug them in and be done with it.

Also; skype is a rip off.

Have you looked at Vox? They provide you with the cordless VoIP phone and the base unit has an ADSL router built in. Their product has come highly recommended by a number of people on the forum - I think it looks pretty cool. I'm getting one soon to try.

Personally I would not consider any provider that cannot provide you with a South African phone number (087-***-****) that other people can phone you on. voipbuster and lowratevoip are based overseas and if anyone wants to call you then they have to make an international phonecall. Not cool.

I can recommend TelFree. Their website is not the most user friendly I've used but their phone support and the quality of their product definitely makes up for it. I have been using them for about 6 months now but only using the pc client. They have hardware phones that you could try out.

i use mweb broadband talk for SA-calls , sipgate.co.uk for inernational and a fritzbox from avm.de + a standard telkom phone or a cordless phone like simens gigaset.
that´s it.. fritzbox is a adslmodem,router,hub and pbx...since 18 month ..
