VOIP on Vodacom 3G

Gizmo is for cellphones if i am not mistaken, so i presume you using this service on your cellphone right?

If so, try fring, I have used it and its pretty good. Can also use it to make calls to skype, google, and msn users.

The only issue i have had is that often i dial a person who is online, but it doesn't connect. i.e. on the other end, it doesn't ring.

You're using two foreign based VoIP providers so you're being nailed with a combination of cellular latency and double international latency (to and from overseas). You should probably try a locally-based VoIP provider.

I've run Switch Telecom's VoIP service over MTN and Vodacom HSDPA. It works well where the signal strength is excellent and where you get HSDPA. EDGE isn't bad. GPRS doesn't work. If your signal isn't very good, I'd suggest getting an external antenna (http://www.poynting.co.za/productdisplay.php?id=151&cat_id=2).

I've also used Switch Telecom directly from a Nokia E70 handset running over MTN 3G/EDGE and call quality is similar to a normal GSM call, with the exception that if you lose 3G and move into GPRS coverage, it stops working. Also, if signal strength is bad, VoIP over 3G tends to break up a little sooner than normal GSM. I used the Nokia's built-in SIP stack. Quality using Fring was slightly problematic, possibly as Fring relays your calls through their own server before getting to the proper SIP server. The latter also presents security/privacy concerns with Fring.

Contact details are at www.switchtel.co.za if you want further advice or to set up a trial.

Fring is free by the way.

A south african similar product is Yeigo www.yeigo.com which is also free, you only pay for the data you use.

I am using both Skype and Gizmo, the call quality is too bad to make a call.
Why?

I left Vodacom because I could never use VOIP on my cellphone with Vodacom. Been with MTN for a good 5 months now I think, not sure. Been perfect. Can have calls greater than 1 hour on their data network without any hassle.

Nobody at Vodacom could tell me what the problem was. The quality issue was everywhere and not just one location. The uplink would continue to broadcast at around 4 - 6kb per second but the downlink would just die and come back after about 6 seconds spikin to 20 - 40kb and going back to 3 - 6 ish and dying again. Sometimes just stops and doesnt come back dropping the call. Does this ever 10 - 15 seconds or so for me.

While its fine the call quality is also very like..staggered. This happened on my phone mostly, with only SLIGHTLY improved performance when using the PC to make calls. It may even be the same, cause I dont often speak on the PC.

I use a good 300MB a month on VOIP.

Since you having such good results, can you let me know what app do you use? Gizmo, Fring, Yeigo, or some other?

I have issues with Fring as per my post, but i prefer it cause i can make Fring to Fring or Fring to MSN or Fring to Skype calls.

I use Skype,Gizmo and Yahoo Messenger on my laptop, and use fring on my cellphone, but no one works well, the call quality is just too bad most of the time!

I was using MTN, but the 3G signal is not very strong in my area, but the viop quality is great.

Vodacom 3G signal is always full here, but I just can't make voip call.

I use Fring now and again, quality isnt bad, but most of the time im using Truphone. Quality is brilliant, if not better than a GSM call. (calling United States , England and Germany)

I never call South Africa with VOIP.
