VOIP over MTN Data Network

I am sure if your PC has being infected with a Virus and is generating more traffic in an hour then what you can do in a month. You would appreciate it if your service provider could pick this up and notify you about it....

It's not about monitoring to block but instead monitoring to improve services.

I have a feeling MTNSP is a bot. I asked the same question, got the exact same repsone, then I pm'd and guess what? Got the exact same response again. Mebbe its a child with a numbered keyboard, pressing the appropriate buttons as answers? And I did try Skype, I could even host a 4 way conference, no lag and clear.

I have not tried VOIP over 3G, but I'll take your word for it that latency is an issue. For me it's a matter of principle. If I've paid for the data, MTN has no right to prescribe to me how to use it. They should be forward looking. It's obvious that calls will be carried on data in future. You can't fight progress. We have gone from data over voice to voice over data.

As for SKYPE being preloaded on phones, it just goes to show how much MTN and its service providers are sellers of boxes and how little they know about what they're selling. Jack.

It's not the ISP's job to do this. If my PC has been infected, then it is MY problem. As long as my data does not infringe on the rights of others (e.g. port scanning etc. - and this can be identified by IP, not packets), the ISP should have no right to prioritise, shape or inspect my data.

Vodacom origianlly said they would charge R10 per MB for voice if you were making a VOIP call. I queried with them how would they know its a voice call, and was informed that it had something to do with the data patterns that show up on the network. Any ideas to that theory? As I have used Skype but still only get charged normal rates. So maybe its a scam to put people off using skype?

I am gonna assume that MTN would do the same , maybe it is just to put people off using VOIP until they have to.

Both MTN lodged high rates for VoIP with ICASA,

MTN @ R25/Mb,
Vodacom @ R10/Mb.

AFAIK, neither are charging these rates but hold the right to do so, they can start charging this tomorrow as it's already approved.

MTN or Vodacom?

I want to buy an i-mate JASJAR, so do I:

pay R1700 thru MTN on Procall120 contract

OR

pay R6500 thru Vodacom on Business contract?

...considering the uncertainty around charges for Skype?

if more and more handset manufacturers ae adding the facility why is there a feeling of no-contest to the networks?surely the power weilding fiends have something to lose if the handset maufacturers stand up to them??cos at the end of the day it becomes a lose lose situation.lets all just get 5110's and typewriters??
just a thought
use it,dont use it
WHATEVEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Mtn Voip

Was anybody ever charged R25/MB when using VOIP over MTN's network?

I personally think that it is just a scaring tactic from MTN.

But I do not want to risk it to find out. :o

Hello guys, im moving back to south africa on tuesday and iv been doing some research all the data bundles and prices from MTN and VODACOM.
i want to ask a few questions

1. How could they know who i am if i am using a starter pack and im making voip calls?
2. It stays on the Vodacom site in the IBURST section that voip calls are unrestricted, so if you are lucky enough to be in an Iburst area have fun!
3. What is the average say data sent through a 10minute conversation over VOIP or even per minute. how muck kb is sent through 1minute of talking over VOIP or how much talking can i do for 1mebayte?

thank you very much and so far i might go with mtn? what do you guys think? any helpful suggestions?

The reality is they don't charge extra for VOIP. You need an Iburst modem to connect to Iburst, not a normal 3G card/phone. The traffic depends on what codec you use etc, I've heard a figure of 500KB/min for Skype but I've never actually checked.
