Has anybody tried to use VoIP on their phone using WLAN instead of 3G, therefore by-passing the costs of data that your cellular service provider would normally charge you? I've been googling it and no relevant results showed up locally. More specifically... I want to try this using a Nokia e65 in Hatfield, Pretoria where there seems to be a free internet hotspot (which also doesn't show up in any search results).

very doable - works like a charm in some areas of cape town if you have the correct phone client

i know that a commercial service using this within environments like university campuses will be launched soon

Shot. I'm quite eager to try this myself when I get my e65 this week. Apparently using the fring client, you get pretty stable and good quality calls. Also good, or so I hear, is the app that comes standard with the 2.0633.65.01 firmware version on the nokia s60 platform - or is it just the E-series, who know? It's called Truphone, or trufone... something like that. Anyway will post some details when I've tried it.

I have added my Nokia N80 on Asterisk as a SIP extension works realy well. So when I'm at the office Switch on WiFi and register on the * box, and my Nokia is my second extension.

Can this work on Wifi networks with WPA? Wouldn't want to have to leave my network unsecured.

I'm using it on Samsung i600 without any problem (via fring), works well for me.

Awesome. Only downside to this type of calling is that your battery life gets depleted so quickly. Buy hey, what a price to pay right?

I'm using voip (SIP calls) via WiFi on a secure network with Blackjack i600 with reasonable voice quality.

Yes, battery life is a concern, i600 comes with an additional battery, very handy.

hey,

well afaik the best voip over wifi that i have used is the yeigo program (www.yeigo.com) i used it on my n93 while i was in the UK just leeching of unsecured connections when i needed to make a call home :P

i also use it on my home wifi.

www.yeigo.com gets my vote
