Hey guys I've been pretty much chucked into the deep end at work and need some advise on VoIP and VPN. I am a little green around the gills when it comes to VoIP so please bare with me...

We are currently running a VoIP system at my company (head office) where I work in Sunninghill. We are opening new offices in Centurion and they want me to connect that site to head office via VPN and run voice and data on the line. The new office will have around 20 people.

I need to know which service provider would be the best to use in my given budget of R1,000 per month. Because of this a leased line is out of the question and in my mind the only options left for me would be ADSL or IBURST but I'm pretty sure IBURST can't guarantee quality of service...

Any advice guys? If I install a 1024 ADSL line at the new office and have 1024 ADSL at head office will it work well if we use the line for other data aswell?

No Change, Seeing that you setting up to 20 extension in the other branch, there is no way that you will be able to run it over ADSL. Just bare in mind, that ADSL in South Africa aren't guaranteed. Plus with that budget, you wont be able to get uncapped. Some people will say that this can be done, but you are only going to make an a$$ of yourself.
You need to look at what the ROI would be and motivate to your company to go leased line. On an 20 extension system, it could easily justify lookin at that option.
You can take my word, as whe have tried all the options.

Yep, I think ADSL going to be a stretch. You main problem will be the uplink.

Generally for 20 users (varies from co. to co.) you'd need about a 3:1 ext to trunk ratio, which would mean ~7 peak conucrrent calls. If you used the G729 codec (best quality/bw ratio) your ADSL line would need to sustain an upload of ~ 160Kbps without much packet loss & jitter.

Even though 1-4 Mbps ADSL is rated from 384Kbps upload, from experience it will rarely sustain that rate (3-4 calls is max if you got a stable line).

So as Garlic says, you're going to need to go leased line, either local only Internet access or VPN or if the distance is not too far just get a point-to-point diginet line using your own routers (no provider).

DSL VoIP VPN

Hang on guys, before getting too technical, are the VoIP calls breakout, or just there for office to office calls?
You should be looking for:
ADSL VPN/Firewall router rental
3 GB (Shaped) Internet Bandwidth
Usage Statistics
24h remote maintenance + support
24h remote firewall management
6 Port VoIP Gateway, Router, 384kDSL line
Give me a shout if you want more detail, but bottom line, you ain't going to get the above for less than R 1700.00, ex vat, ex installation fees

And how do you propose to run 6 calls through the 64Kbps upstream of a 384DSL? Maybe more technical is what we do need.

Roman4604, let them be. If they want to go ahead, let them find out the hard way. As I take it, both of us have. Everyone always think, just maybe we can get away with it and it will work. Surely you would be able to do it if you had only one extension, but even then it is still taking a chance as bandwidth isn’t guaranteed.

They must just remember that for a 20 extension site, they will most probably have to run Codec G711. As conference calls can't be compressed because to much intelligence on the links are lost.

but that sounded odd to me...
Well spotted, my head is still stuck in the 192Kbps days. Anyway doesnt change things much, 128Kbps upstream (which doesnt really sustain that speed), isnt enough to run more than 1-2 concurrent calls.
