So, I just got this upgrade on my Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

But I'm wondering what it is?

I know the theory - but does anything change from an end user point?
Seems pricing etc is all identical?
So - is it just something that happens automatically in the background?
No apps or anything to enable?
Lastly - benefit to me or my nework?

Clearer and HD calls. Calls are also said to connect a lot quicker. Another benefit could be if you have bad 2G and 3G signal but good 4G signal (Yes, I have seen this a few times on Vodacom). Billing etc works all the same. It might also improve your battery slightly due to the fact that the phone does not have to switch down to 3G to make or take a call all the time. Network benefit is that Volte is very efficient in its spectrum ussage. You network needs to support it though. To my knowledge only Vodacom supports Volte. I know Cell C supports VoWiFi, but not sure if they support Volte. Also, only certain handsets are supported and then, those handsets must have the correct Vodacom firmware on it.

My Lenovo phone supports Volte, but mine does not work on Vodacom Volte because it does not have Vodacom firmware on it. It sucks.

It sounds a terrible restriction. It you take phone overseas, there will be no VoLTE. Are they going to follow standard?

Thanks Ockie.

I'm on the supported network (Vodacom) with a supported handset (Mate 10) - is there more?

I heard I need to phone and get it activated? I hope not though, as the agents often aren't clued up and it'll be a nightmare to explain.

Last thing - any icons or anything to know it's actually working?

Some phones might display a volte icon or a HD icon there where Ure signal bars are. It varies from brand to brand. Yes...volte must be provisioned on the network. Another way of telling if Ure volte is working is by making a call and checking if your phone keeps displaying 4g / LTE or if it switches down to 3g. You can on me Ure number and when I am on my laptop later I can check for u if it is active in ure line

It drops to 3G :(

I need to phone the callcentre ?
Or you able to do it ?

@Rouxenator But only on the one sim, it seems.
Correct, my normal VodaCom SIM. The second SIM is a data only SIM. I have for years notices VoLTE on all my other VodaCom SIMs, just not on my main one. Today it seams it will happily jump between VoLTE and VoWIFI depending on coverage. Took them a few years to enable it on my SIM, but now it's there.
