Am considering buying one ... any advice ... pros and cons?

Love the styling - it's different - can get top of the range for less - Volvo's are safe cars - it's got sex appeal (well IMO at least) - it's a two door...

Besides all that... how are services and general maintenance?

Anyone owned one that can comment?

Have a look at the S40 T5 - in my opinion, it has better looks and last time I looked, its not even that much more expensive.

Friend's dad has an older S40 2.0 (something like 2008 or 2009), apparently its always in the shop. But thats just one dude, I dont know about overrall.

very nice car (would take one if given it for free)

But I have too many friends who have or had Volvo's that are/were either in the shop (waiting for parts), or in the garage (out of warranty and too expensive to repair).

But granted, about 2 months ago I saw a Volvo (S40) roll on the Krugerdorp highway.
The guy climbed out of the car (on it's roof) pen & paper in hand as-if nothing had happened.
The car was a wreck but he had not a scratch on him.

Two chicks in a Corolla (same accident, their car also rolled) were not as lucky.

They are more reliable than the previous posts suggest.

The T5 engine is AWESOME, but then I have a weakness for a 5 cylinder growl. You do pay the price at the pumps, though. It is thirsty. Seems even if driven sedately, its still heavy on the juice.

I say go for it.

Ask Alfie Cox! :) His Power Steering packed up, burst a pipe, caught fire and burnt out. This was at the start of the Dakar rally in Argentina, I don't remember the model Volvo.

I prefer the C30 in looks actually... I'm only 27 I don't wanna look like an old man in his volvo haha - nice two door extended hatch - too hot...

Good enough reason then... especially the way I drive

Ok well looks like the jury is split on this one so it can go either way... Only had my car for a year now so maybe in a year or two I'll get a r-design :D

Just to make it more interesting, get a VW Scirocco 2.0. Looks even hotter in my opinion and the performance is almost identical. Also about as common as the C30 T5 so you won't be "just another douche".

I bought a 2008 C30 T5 R Design .... absolutely love the car.

Safe, smooth, quick, looks good, well specced and well priced

sorry not for that price... :S - cheapest one I found was R260k

although admittedly it's a fugen hot car! I'll take a look around when the time comes at what is available...

Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV :)

But I do agree, I love the C30 but it has to be the R Design.

You can find a 2nd hand one, 10k on the clock for like R280!

well my car before what I have now was an Uno, just had my corsa turbo for a year, but at 27 I'm needing something a little more 'adult' than a corsa ... So i reckon if I get the t5 (non r-design) with +- 60k on the clock at around R180k that be perfect...

Crap thing is I could get the r-design now - but I'm still renting so I thought I'd better buy a house rather than squander it on a car that's just for show... Still want it though but it can wait a little.

I am sorry but I do not like the C30 AT ALL!! Think it's one of the ugliest cars on the road. But hey, that's just in my opinion. If you like it then go for it. It's a Volvo and they seem like well put together cars. Also like you said, it is quite safe :)

That being said... I would take one of these anyday!!!
