Voting in 1994

Woke up that morning when the bombs at Johannesburg Int Airport went off, felt the shock wave and thought oh-oh. Turned out my uncle was on one the planes that had to circle, obviously a lot of concerned family members contacted us, as if we could do anything.
Couldn't vote that year, I only turned 18 in December. The DP was not very popular at the time, although it was my choice at that stage. But I have to say that they never actually changed their views, they always was against the ruling party :) I just couldn't believe the NP was running. We dealt with the rise of Apartheid in History, so it was actually quite interesting learning its beginnings and witnessing the end.

And before that it was PFP... Helen Suzman ftw.

Before her we had Van Zyl Slabbert... But that is going back a really, really long time.
To be honest, '94 was the one and only time I switched and voted Nat... Figured we needed a strong opposition then and I still do now.

And don't forget Colin Eglin, Zach de Beer and Harry Schwarz...

I recall my family stocking up on candles and tin food...

Bit too young to vote at that stage. Never changed my vote in the time that I've been able to though.

The voting itself was anti-climatic. Some folks queued overnight, etc. but I waited until around 5pm and walked in, made my crosses and walked out.

There was more tension late that night and the next day when the results started filtering through.

I would say that there was an air of inevitability that the ANC would win by a landslide.

The doomsayers were also out in full force saying that everybody should stock up on food, petrol, etc. as the swartgevaar would wipe out all in their path.... and here we are 17 years later!

Who would have thought they where right? Have you seen the prices nowadays? :p

My dad said some okes sold cokes for like R1 extra at the election lines which was like R5 today :)

Didn't vote (was just a bit too young unfortunately)

But did go with my parents to the voting station, and I remember there being an air of tension but at the same time excitement.....
