What was it like to you? I was only 5 years old at the time so I didn't even know about apartheid etc, would be interesting to see what it was like in your perspective.

Ya ya enough voting threads but its voting day live with it :)

The voting itself was anti-climatic. Some folks queued overnight, etc. but I waited until around 5pm and walked in, made my crosses and walked out.

There was more tension late that night and the next day when the results started filtering through.

I would say that there was an air of inevitability that the ANC would win by a landslide.

The doomsayers were also out in full force saying that everybody should stock up on food, petrol, etc. as the swartgevaar would wipe out all in their path.... and here we are 17 years later!

No. There was too much at stake for both "major" parties. Obviously many folks were afraid but that was due to them believing all the rumours being spread by the idiots.

No. iirc it rained here...

It was a wonderful feeling standing in the same queue as blacks, whites, coloureds, indians etc voting together for the first democratic vote.

I couldn't vote then, but to me it seemed like a normal vacation day. I know my father and mother had to drive into town as we just moved to a new part of town. After my parents voted, we had a braai yes.

so who here has changed the party they voted for since '94?

Be honest now

Interesting stat. The DP was the liberal party and yet got so few votes. Who did the liberals vote for? hmmm

Perhaps Dave could shed some light on the issue.....

I was 7 at the time. I remember noticing a tension in the air everywhere & seeing those armoured military crowd control vehicles standing around on sidewalks (called buffalo or aardvark or something). Didn't know what was going on though, just that something wasn't normal & parents on edge.

A short while after the election I got a jacket which was basically one large New SA Flag. I liked it because it was colourful. Walked around in that in some private resort place & a Afrikaaner came up to me and told me "Hulle sal jou dood maak in dit". My mom had a really rough time explaining that to a confused 7 year old.... :)

Was only 7years old at the time, but I remember going with when my parents voted. Wasn't really a big deal as I grew up in a family where I was taught to see everyone as equal.

The 1st black student joined my primary school in 1994 when I was grade 2. Didn't really understand why some people were making a fuss about it. I remember jumping on our trampoline and playing 'army army' with our domestic workers children during school holidays.

It was my 18th birthday on the 27 April 1994. My parents were so excited to vote, everyone forgot my birthday, :( except the ppl at the voting station. They sang happy birthday which I thought was sweet.

yip, voted in '94 .. long queues... joined the queue near our front gate as we lived 2 blocks away from the voting station at the time. So did not have to go very far ..lol
Basically voted for the same party since then , not many options or other worthwhile choices.

I Voted for the first time today and would really love to be able to understand what apartheid felt like, cause there are soo many differing opinions, i am just glad i could vote :)
