Not sure if anyone else has experienced this problem or knows a solution.

Well my Wife and I registered to vote during the previous elections. During that time we were still dating. We got married 2 years ago and she didn't take on my Surname yet (we haven't got around to that).

So she sms'd the IEC to confirm that she still registered in our ward and she is but turns out they updated her surname to mine. Now she turn vote because the IEC updated her details without her knowing.

The contact centre said she should take it up with home fairs.

What the hell, what can be done?

It's your right to vote now the IEC screws you over.

I'd suggest that she take along her normal ID book and marriage cert to the voting station. Speak to station manager, if necessary. It's her right to vote. Surely ID number takes preference over name?

+1 - Just sort it out at the station. Please let us know how this plays out.

To be fair we went through at least four registration weekends where they had massive campaigns urging everyone to make sure they are registered and to check even if you've registered before. You leaving this to 1 day before the election is really not their fault.

You had plenty time to sort it out. You can't blame the IEC for screwing you over.

@Frikkenator, @genetic: We always knew we were registered and checked using the IEC website and it confirmed our Ward of registration, that was a week ago. The website does not show your full name.
Only after hearing it from a friend did she sms.

@Viva: Will definitely fill in guys in come Wednesday morning.

I understand we might have overlooked this issue but the details on her ID book have not changed. So why would they presume.

They will issue you with a temp ID at home affairs that can be used for voting , go today , go early , go now!!!
Brace yourself for the queue's at home affairs.

and home affairs will be open for long long long hours on voting day. don't know how they do it, but they are very effecient during election times..

Why go to Home Affairs if we don't plan to change her Surname? (Sorry for the stupid question)

Why'd they change her surname then? If you didn't change the surname, why would they do it? Point being, the authorities are under the impression her surname is the same as yours. Therefore you need to pitch up with documentation that's consistent with their system, otherwise she could be shown away.

Maybe the ID + marriage certificate is enough, but I dunno if I'd take that chance.

I just phoned the IEC call Center (0800 11 8000 / +27 11 654 1000) the guy said, all they need is the ID number they don't care about the surname.

Thanks guys for the replies.

Unlike what the IEC call centre told my Wife. She voted using her ID number even though her Surname was changed.

Voting done.
