Get Afrihost at R29 per GB. No one can beat their price/service/quality combination.

How much does Vox charge?

UPDATE: They are ridiculously expensive:
R50 set up fee + R50 per GB for unshaped.

Go with Afrihost. No setup fee. R29 per GB + there is currently a top up special of buy 1 get 1 free, bringing the effective per GB pricing to R14.50 (for topups).

What was wrong with SAOL? They were down yesterday - not sure what happened, but before and after that, everything seemed to be going good.

If you don't already have ADSL (i.e. you are a new customer for ADSL), apply for it through SAOL, and pay R500 per month for 384K ADSL line rental and uncapped internet. Now that's a great deal.

I am currently on this deal, and have so far downloaded 20GB since 6 Jan, bringing my effective per GB cost to about R17. By the end of this month it will be closer to R10 per GB, as I download more stuff. Trust me, they are way better than Screamer and DigiChilli in terms of network quality and stability.

Afrihost

If I don't have ADSL on my line yet,
Does Afrihost organise the whole process of
1. Getting the ADSL activation,
2. Dealing with Telkom on my behalf
3. Then provides me with internet ?
4. Does Afrihost fee include the Telkom ADSL tax ?

In other words, does Afrihost provide a full service ?

Afrihost doesn't do the whole process. So no to the above. They will only provide you with a bandwidth account, i.e. data usage, i.e. a username and password to enter in your ADSL modem/router. You will still need to apply for an ADSL line through Telkom. However, you will only need to apply for the ADSL line (aka ADSL Access protion), and not for bandwidth (aka the ISP portion).

However, SAOL will do "the whole process" for you. But you have to apply for an all-in-one package - this includes ADSL line rental (aka ADSL Access portion) and Bandwidth (aka ISP Portion). ADSL line rental is usally paid to Telkom - that is the traditional model. But Telkom has since allowed ISPs to resell the ADSL Access portion. This is what SAOL are doing.

However, you have to have a Telkom phone line installed at your place already. It can't be prepaid, and it has to be active. Then you can apply with SAOL.

Phone them up, and they will explain the whole process to you. I recommend the 384K uncapped all-in-one account. Since you don't have ADSL yet, you'll get the price of R499 per month. You have to buy an ADSL modem as well of course. Buy this upfront for cash.

So your total monthly cost will come out to R499 + current Telkom bill.

Thank you. I will contact SAOL to get sorted ASAP.
I've had horrible expeience with the bring your own modem setups. It's a lot of hassle to deal with Telkom.
I've got a Telkom line and my own Linksys Wireless N router which I used before I moved back to South Africa.

Are you not on a farm somewhere outside Ellisras and beyond 4km from the nearest exchange?

Yes, I am on a farm. about 1,3km from where the Post Office used to be about 20 years ago. As far I know the exchange is situated in the other part of town called Onverwacht. I know exacly where the exchange is. I was told by Telkom techie that there is something like relay (or whatever it is called) which should then be no more than 1,5km from where I live.

We are (one of) the 1st farm (houses) outside the town boundary.
In another topic someone suggested I go visit the exchange and speak to somebody there. I drove past there today but couldn't stop. Doors at exchange where wide open. Next time I pass there I'll go and ask.

Thanx for everybodies respons, seems like soal is offering the best bet in town, I have already applied for it so I will give them a try.

Nothing can be worse than hellcom and there daylight robbery or can it??
