Hopefully someone can help me.

I'm trying to understand the differences and price discrepancies between "DSL" Fatpipe data and "Fibre" Fatpipe data.

On the Telkom network all data is via IPC? And everywhere we read that the IPC component is a BIG element of total bandwith cost?

So, why would 200GB DSL Fatpipe cost R489 p/m and the same 200GB via Fibre cost R639 p/m? 30% extra?

And for 400GB it goes from R899 p/m to R1215 p/m, a 35% increase.

Thanks,
D

If it's fibre via Telkom, the ISP is still charged an IP Connect cost, same as via DSL.

Another reason for the higher price is that contention ratios on Fibre are often lower than with DSL. This has a big impact on price, but also results in better performance.

But i'm just guessing. Only Vox knows why they charge what they charge. You will see that on networks other than telkom Vox's price is significantly lower.

Have you included line rental for the DSL and used similar line speeds in both these price comparisons?

For normal capped accounts line speed is never a price factor? Same price regardless of linespeed.

I'm excluding line rental from my comparison.

Hmmm - contention ratio is the only thing that might make sense.

Normal Vox Telecom DSL Fatpipe will work just fine via Telkom FTTH.

Hi

I think they might just not know about the IPC on the Telkom FTTH packages, they are sales people after all..

They are offering a lot of other fibre options via different networks of which none will work with normal DSL accounts.

The DSL fatpipe works lekker on Telkom FTTH from VOX.

The lady told me the "coding" on the back end is different for the different products and that it won't authenticate / work.

I've got 20 years programming experience and she confused me ;)

The Vox DSL connections are 40Mbps maximum. If you have a faster fibre line, then you won't get full speed.

no fat pipe has no such restrictions stop spreading false information

It was a restriction when i signed up. I don't see it on the site anymore. It only says "Ideal for Telkom ADSL and VDSL lines".

Yes, i'm a Vox client. I use them for my home connection. Their service is quite adequate, and i haven't had any issues with speed on my VDSL connection. That is more than i can say for any other ISP i've tried at home, with the exception of Crystalweb. Today's "Friday Frenzy" special is ridiculously good value. One of the best deals i've seen yet.

it has never been a restriction, ever. And Vox have had better deals before, like their 400GB for R485 deal. You don't even have a fibre line, how can you claim such a restriction was enforced?

Never claimed it was enforced. I remember seeing it as a restriction when i signed up. But age is getting to me, so it's not impossible that i'm confusing it with crystalweb t&c's. Still, it's something to check.

Do you have a fibre line? have you tested it?
