Hi networking experts.

Hopefully somebody can tell me what is going on here!
I cannot connect to a L2TP VPN (shared key) connection on a Windows 10 Pro laptop via an iPhone 11 hotspot on MTN.
The error "Remote Access error 800 - The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed" Is issued.

The details are specific as these alternatives work:
- I can connect to VPN from iPhone via MTN directly...just not via hotspot to W10 laptop.
- I can connect to VPN from iPhone via MTN hotspot using iPad...but not W10 laptop.
- I can connect to VPN with W10 laptop via Rain LTE wifi router...not MTN hotspot.
- I can connect to VPN with W10 laptop if on the same VPN network (i.e. mobile data bypass).

I have tried these variations numerous times thinking it was a timing issue...but no: This combination does not work "I cannot connect to a L2TP VPN connection on a Windows 10 Pro laptop via an iPhone 11 hotspot on MTN.". All other combinations work.

Absolutely strange!

Any ideas?
Thanks in Advance
Joe

It sounds to me that the Win 10 laptop has a problem. can you try an IPSEC vpn on Win 10 laptop via Iphone hotspot?

To anybody with the same issue, please note that MTN need to change your account to an "Unrestricted" APN, which is done on request. They (MTN) seemed to know what this was and put a request in for me. Lets see how long it takes to get actioned.

Called them yesterday to activate the MTNVPN service and I received a sms this morning to advise that it was actioned. Changed my APN to 'mtnvpn' (no username or password necessary) and it's working. Great.

Damn that's a quick response you got there. I had to try for 3 months calling once or twice week to tell them it's not active then had to jump through all the hoops again

I think it's a bit of a lottery when it comes to which call centre agent you speak to. The one I spoke to was super efficient and knew exactly what I was talking about. Logged a request with there data team as she couldn't do it directly. She followed up as well which is a rarity amongst call centre agents.

Hi
I have spent the week trying to get the MTNVPN APN enabled on my Business contract SIMM. I finally hit the jackpot and got someone at the callcentre who understood. They informed me that I need to send an email to [email protected] with a request on a letterhead and a copy of the authorised signatory's ID. This will then take 24-48 hours to be processed. Lets hope

similar setup on telkom.By default it blocks vpn and by changing the apn to "unrestricted" it sorts the issue out.
