Hi everyone

Hope someone will be able to help me with this situation.

I live in a complex where all the internet access is contracted out to a single company - each unit has a VOIP phone, with an ethernet port at the back, and you plug that into your router and setup your PPPoE login details to connect.

I want to get an Android TV setup going at home, and VPN is sorta a necessity. I'm already an ExpressVPN customer for a while now.

My hardware is as follows:

TP-LINK WR840N router
ASUS RT-N18U router
Mi Box

I played around last night, hooking the TP-LINK to the phone, and the ASUS to the TP-LINK, and setting up OpenVPN client on the ASUS, though the speeds were pretty dismal compared to what I normally get using software VPN.

So I've had some thoughts and ideas, and I'm just looking for some suggestions or guidance:

1. Is there any benefit to using a two router setup, since ASUS natively supports OpenVPN? I'd like to be able to have the option to connect to an access point either behind or in front of the VPN, but I suppose it isn't an absolute necessity.

2. Is there a way to improve my speed while still having the router handle VPN?

3. Is there any sense in trying different firmware (Tomato, DD-WRT) on the router?

4. Should I just abandon ship and try sideload the ExpressVPN APK onto the droid box?

Or any other ideas/suggestions on how to get this set up to work correctly.

Thanks for your help!

Why is a VPN needed? Knowing this, we can assist you in finding the correct setup.

What version is the WR840N? If version 4, it probably has a stronger SoC (MediaTek MT7628) than the ASUS (BCM47081A0), theoretically making it more suitable for doing harder work. That's assuming of course that the problem is due to processor load.

Don't know the version off hand, but it's one of the newer, ****tier ones.

I don't think it's a processor load issue, because the ASUS app reports CPU usage persistently less than 5%?

I'm gonna try disable QOS because I've gleaned that can be an issue. I'm also gonna try some different VPN protocols, and see if any of that helps.

FWIW, here are some speed test results:

Protocol Location Up Down
None 19.4 10.01
Software DC 1.56 1.17
Software ZA 12.01 8.54
OpenVPN ZA 10.23 8.07
OpenVPN DC 1.00 1.14
L2TP ZA 19.28 9.35
L2TP DC 5.7 3.10

Going to test out some other providers, perhaps.
