I have the following config:

DSL 384K
Netgear DG834GT Router
Wireless network at home running to main pc, laptop etc, no wired network
Bit Defender Internet Security

I want to know what to do to enable me to remotely control my PC when I'm not at home. It's always on, and I may want to add a torrent into cue, add a NZB, grab a pic off remotely etc.

How, if possible, can I do this? And also have protection?

Any help would be appreciated.

The way I'd do it would be to do something like this:

1) Get yourself a DynDNS account, so that you can link your IP address to a hostname.
2) Download TightVNC and run the server-side on your home PC.
3) Add VNC as an exception to your router's firewall (check this site)
4) Connect to your hostname via the client-side application on the remote PC

This isn't especially secure, but it should suffice for what you need to do. If you set up a strong password server-side then you don't need to worry too much ;)

EDIT: You'll probably also have to set TightVNC as a trusted application in BitDefender :)

That looks good, and its free. Will it allow me to remotely access applications and execute them on the home pc remotely?

Seems to be working fine on local only conn, now just need to get the laptop back so that I can try access pc remotely.
