Hi

Over the last few months i've barely been able to work from home! After logging a call with my company's IT support team I was told it is due to my ISP throttling accounts or such. I am in IT and require after hours support so this is detrimental to my after hour support capability. Would it be possible to confirm whether or not vpn traffic is being prioritised or not?

My issue is that after ive connected my VPN which does not drop or dc, however, all my apps and server connections will drop periodically causing a 15min support issue to become a 60min issue.

Your support is highly appreciated.

Regards

I use VPN fom time to time, and have not had major problems. I have noticed that my work Windows 10 laptop does check in with the company WSUS server soon after the VPN is connected. This could cause what you see, where updates are being downloaded and they flood the line for a while (if you have a company laptop connected to the company WSUS).

If you're using a normal ADSL account (not LTE) I'd guess you have a problem with your companies IT support. We run many net to net vpns 24/7 using axxess, webafrica & TI capped accounts without issues.

Get yourself a few free test adsl accounts and try them next time

Thanx Nicki I will enquire about this as it was not something i considered, esp when youre G@tv0l of issues at 12am in the morning...

So ive just confirmed all our updates do not run over vpn as our laptops are not "locked down". So this wouldn't be the cause...

Do you perhaps know the software being used ?
Is it OpenVPN by any chance ?

Yip, its Junos Pulse.... a few month back i was working fine and as stated its not the VPN or the software itself but rather the connection over the tunnel.

thanx

VPN is s difficult one to troubleshoot as the issue can be at either end. Is other people using the VPN as constantly as you, and are they having issues?

If its only you, then test different internet connections on your side - ADSL accounts, even wifi hotspot from your phone(NB monitor usage)

It sounds to me like there is congestion or packetloss. See if you can ping the VPN ip address for 20/30minutes,(before connecting to it) and see if any losses is reported.

after that, connect to VPN and do a similar ping test to an ip on the VPN network.

if it only starts dropping after connecting to VPN, then i would assume your laptop is downloading something via the VPN (normally the VPN by default forces your internet through the tunnel then out, thus a downloading application will flood the VPN pipe.

If other people is having the same issues, then the outbound capacity at the VPN offfice is not sufficient.

Hi!

There shouldn't be any issues with VPNs at the moment. What type of package do you have with us? What speed is your DSL Line running at?

Hey Genie

afrigreen
Uncapped 2mbps bundle

Just so btw here you can see a ping of a server over vpn with 21% & 29% packet loss...

Packets: Sent = 33, Received = 26, Lost = 7 (21% loss),
pproximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 29ms, Maximum = 148ms, Average = 50ms

Packets: Sent = 62, Received = 44, Lost = 18 (29% loss),
pproximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 31ms, Maximum = 287ms, Average = 48ms

Could you perhaps run an MTR to the server in question? Would love to see where exactly this P/L is coming in. :)

Could you maybe post a screenshot. This is a little hard to decipher when the columns are not aligned :(

Not sure what's happening here. These don't look like IP's on our network.

Maybe the best way forward is to give us a login we can test from our side.

Drop me a PM with your contact details and I'll put you in touch with one of our guys who can try to recreate what you are experiencing.
