hello im kayla and im new here, but need some help pls.

My dad has started a startup and we have 3 pc's here at home and another rep working for him that doesnt come into the office.

my dad wants the rep to be able to login remotely via vpn into our file server at home.

We using LTE router but everyone is connected with these network cables.

all pc's here have windows 10 professional.

rep also has a laptop that has windows 10 pro

he connects to the internet with mobile data or sometimes when he is at home he has ADSL

how can we make that the rep can login to our file server ( win 10 pro ) and copy files or modify etc etc

we can obviously connect to the file server here at home but my dad also sometimes goes outta town and wants to login to the server too from wherever.

im so sorry if this sounds stupid but I've been reading this forum for a while and you experts seem friendly and helpful so I'm trying my luck.

if you need anymore info pls let me know.

Welcome,

You have a couple of options, the easiest would be to get n DYNDNS name and register that on the ADSL router, then forward the needed ports to the "server", and lastly to setup MS VPN to accept connections.

Then on the client (outside) pc/nb you specify the dyndns name on the build in VPN app, and you can connect from anywhere on the net to your server.

This would be the basics, now you can setup a VPN between your router and external party, or you can use OpenVPN, and not MS stuff.

You can setup pfSense firewall if you have an old pc with 2 network cards, and make a VPN between that and external users.

You can also get static IP for ADSL if you dont want to use DynDNS.

Basically a long list of options

VPN night be a little tricky with the connection type being LTE. LTE is good, but you might not be able to forward the ports needed for a VPN (unless you have an unrestricted APN). Why not use Cloud services like Dropbox to share the relevant files with the other person?

Google Drive?

We use it at our office and it's the bomb!

Hmm I use Hamachi for wide but small networks. It's very easy to setup and connect and LTE/ADSL works 100% with it. Give it a try before going the more advanced route.

wow so many replies thank you! I was expecting some troll replies to be honest.

you see, there might be multiple people logged onto the file server via VPN so my dad doesn't want to use Teamviewer with multiple people logging on at the same time. sorry he isnt very tech savvy ( neither am I )lol

Dropbox we thought about but here's the problem...

On file server let's say there's a folder called Kayla. That folder contains subfolders.

My dad wants to grant specific permissions per user who may & may not view / edit files in that folder when they connect VPN style. hope im clear lol

we found out apparently dropbox is a real mission with that. they want payment etc

So Google Drive & Hamachi remain.

Does Google Drive cater for that permissions per user thingy?

I've heard about Hamachi, gamers use it. Can it do the permissions thingy?

im very sorry im noob. my dad doesn't have a lot of money so we're willing to spend on a subscription or pro version or whatever, but he does have a budget

ty to all so far! whew, you guys are amazing.

EDIT: someone told me something about using Win 10 with it's built in VPN thingy. Give everyone static IP's ( hope im saying this right ) and setting up the file server to host as VPN or something?

1. Get a Linux VPS (128MB RAM is fine). Don't worry, you'll only spend a couple of minutes on the command line, 99% of the config is via a web page.
2. Install CentOS 6 (or 7 if you're so inclined - I like 6). There are loads of guides on the net (here's one for example). Whichever guide you follow, don't choose one which requires you to set up keys. We will use the client software to do that for us (in fact we won't even need to do anything, its built into the client)
3. You'll probably not have to make any changes except:
a) Create 3 users (one for your server at home and one each for your father and the rep - you can create as many users as you like. You will need to buy OpenVPN licenses if you want to use more than 2 users though. Cost is $9.99 for an annual license per user.
b) Make sure that the users are NOT isolated! If they're isolated they won't be able to communicate with each other.
4. Once set up, on the file server go to the VPS's URL, it will ask you whether you want to connect or log in. Choose connect and it will download the OpenVPN client.
5. Do the same on any machine you want on your VPN.
6. You're done!

Bonus: If you get a VPS in the US and you're lucky (because a lot of the data centre IP's are blocked) then you can watch US Netflix, Hulu, etc.

PS. If you get a MikroTik router or a router which supports OpenVPN you can broadcast this encrypted wifi signal around your house for your devices to connect to if you want to watch some US content.

This entire setup should cost no more than 50 bucks a month (I pay R42)

You can also load Owncloud on the server. Either on a Linux VPS or even the local server. The Windows file share protocol over VPN is often extremely slow.

hello everyone ^_^

my dad said I must say thank you to all who helped us. we're going to try some of the methods here, but if I need help can i come back and ask?

Hope its ok
