Best VPNs for home users

South African residents concerned about their privacy online or who need their web traffic to look like it originates from another country can subscribe to one of numerous virtual private network (VPN) providers.

A VPN acts as an intermediary between a user and the Internet by diverting traffic through servers with a different Internet protocol (IP) address than the user's own.

I've been using Mullvad. Pretty great and it's monthly, which is quite refreshing for the VPN industry.
Let me guess, their offices were recently raided and nothing was found, which is a testament to just how good their privacy is.

I swear, I've heard more about Mullvad in the last week than I have in the last few years.

I'm suspicious.

Switzerland being green, I assume better privacy laws, means nothing.

Would be nice to mention which ones support double hop.

Most people don't need a VPN and you are probably even more secure without one, unless you are using some dodgy free wifi.
How do you really know if the VPN doesn't keep logs?

Damn I didn't even know about this .

Can it stream iPlayer?
DoH + HTTPS won't work around geolocation.
Will work to prevent snooping on your traffic.

If your object to to prevent snooping of your data then simple DoH and HTTPS will do that.

TIP:
  • VPN's give a false sense of privacy - don't use your credit card to sign up
  • VPN's give a false sense of anonymity - browser cookies still track you

Mullvad has a fairly strong reputation and has been around a while. They don't spend as much on marketing as NordVPN or SurfShark though.

You can sign up anonymously and send them cash in an envelope, or pay in cryptocurrency. Impractical for most users (particularly Saffers, as the envelope will definitely get lost) but for someone for whom anonymity is critical it's quite nice.
