Hi guys,

I'm looking for a decent VPN router - needs to support +-50-60 users at this point in time.

I'd prefer a stand alone unit vs a Mikrotik board or a Linux box. At the end of the day its easier to configure and manage and swap out in terms of hardware failure.

Needs to be secure - so no recommendations of a Windows based VPN host please.

Thanks,
J

"Decent" is hardly a financial term, maybe specify your budget ?
I have a few recommendations - but they (might) be out of your budget
(or in it?)

Checkpoint have the safe@office / Edge devices (although these might be a bit expensive).
Alternatively you can use the draytek router

I would look at a Fortinet or Cyberoam device. Both great and fairly simple to setup.

PM Sent to you.

As suggested by Telkom

For what it is worth Telkom advise the use of the Billion 400G

VPN Lite

VPN Lite customers are advised to specifically ask for Billion 400G ADSL routers at your nearest Telkom Direct store and state you are using it for VPN Lite. The older Billion 800 VGT, Mega 100 (WR1), Mega 100 (WR2), Mega 200, Telkom Premium Combo and Telkom Zyxel 2602 are also still supported by the 0860 473 473 call center.

I took the OP to mean IPSEC when he stated vpn, and not mpls for his private network

What did the OP say ?

I took the OP to mean IPSEC when he stated vpn, and not mpls for his private network
The OP said nothing about any specification for the secure part of the VPN ( or much else he just said he wanted a VPN router )

IPsec is just part of a bigger bundle of cryptographic methods (protocols)

MPLS is merely a medium ( used for Telkoms VPN lite )

I am sure the recommended router handles what the OP wants ? ( VPN over ADSL )

In any case what does the ADSL connect to in order to forward the traffic onwards ?

you used references only for telkom vpn light for your recommendation, hence I made the distinction that my recommendations were more for IPsec tunnels and didnt take into consideration any kind of mpls infrastructure.

As for the secure part, depending on how anal you are about these things, mpls could be considered secure already.

What is in debate, i suppose, is what he defines as what he wants for his private network.
Is he going to create this using IPsec tunnels, or using mpls.

I took this part to mean that he was not interested in a pure M$ solution

I think that most paste and glue type routers use L2TP/IPsec ?

I am no security fundi -- however CCIE Security peeps look in here now and again , perhaps they can explain and correct.

It all gets quite complex -- too much for my pea-sized brain :D

How "Private" ?

Perhaps this is what the OP is after ?

Perfect Privacy ?

I am not sure what happens in SA when you start using encrypted communication ?

Maybe you could use some dormant Gov IP's ???? :)

Otherwise surf from the Ecuadorean Embassy :D
