VPN set-up assistance

Hi there,

This post is going to reveal how ignorant and clueless I am but hopefully this will give enough info for kind folks to assist.

I've taken out the PureVPN 1 year Black Friday subscription deal thinking that I can trick my Smart TV to think I'm from another territory and download other territory apps and watch content from there.

Googling, it appears my logic is faulty and that this won't achieve what I was hoping for. So could this be my first mistake and I should cancel the PureVPN subscription altogether?
Anyway, assuming that it would work, PureVPN advises I achieve this by changing the PPTP settings of the server at my router, where my TV cable plugs into.
The router I use is a TP Link Archer C20 / AC 750. My ISP is Cool Ideas. Cool Ideas uses the PPoE protocols on this router.
PureVPN's instructions advises by using PPTP settings. As soon as I switch to PPTP, there goes my internet connection.

So, I have 2 questions please:
1. Is VPN the way to go / will it help to trick my Samsung Smart TV and let me watch content from other territories? Or should I cancel the VPN subscription
2. If yes, how can I get the PureVPN to work on my router?
