VPN - Virtual Private Network

We need some help with setting up a VPN:

server: http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn_server.htm client: http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn.htm

followed steps on these links but only get connected but cant c PC's like sharing or gaming on it ?

Is there a alternative to XP ? (lan over internet)

Please help (dont want to use hamachi - local only)

You sure that under the server:networking software and client:networking software the following services/protocols were selected:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer sharing
TCP/IP

Also, make sure the workgroup name is the same on the server and client.

Under TCP/IP advanced options, play around with the "Use default gateway on remote computer" for the client machine.

What happens if you ping a machine from the client?

Hamachi is cool and all, but you can't use it with local only ADSL accounts. Me and my buddy are trying to set a VPN over our Netgear routers now. All is well except for the disconnections after 'bout 2-5min Any help?
