Vumatel with own router?

The cross connect to Vumatel happens at IS Parklands actually, they more than likely do the PPPoE thing for accounting basis. And the way the Vumatel system works is actually layer 3 so it makes doing PPPoE impossible unless you run a tunnel to your network over IP and then PPPoE over that to your NAS which then plugs into accounting etc etc.

So what they could possibly do is just issue you the PPPoE details and you would then use a router which plugs into theirs and establishes the connection, that way you can change routers whenever you like. Still a bit of a workaround having so many devices.

Yeah, sorry, I meant PPTP, not PPPoE.

One wonders exactly what the point of the Mikrotik is in that case, if they are prepared to "bridge it out".
To run a PPPoE session so that they can have session management and not have to rely on Vumatel's non-existent DHCP "integration" which makes supporting users very difficult.

My suspicion is that the home connect guys don't have enough Internet breakout at teraco where the interconnect is done to the Vumatel network. So they create a tunnel to their data centre and then break you out from there.
A tunnel isn't required for that, standard routing would work (at most an extra vrf).

It's probably because without it there is no guarantee you know who is using which IP (Vumatel's solution is not very mature as far as I have seen).

It's easy to get the active IP address assigned to an object number using VUMA's API.

Sure, but I don't want to have to poll every users IP every hour. It doesn't scale.

Fair enough. I have heard a webhook for IP address assignment is in the works which should make it a bit easier.

Yes, this was also promised to us 6 months ago and there are still no timelines available.

One wonders if it will take a subpoena for information on an IP address (which any ISP can provide reliably with to-the-second accuracy for their own IPs on say Telkom IPC due to having real RADIUS starts and stops with exact timestamps) for Vumatel to take this issue seriously.

(We have also considered just re-using infrastructure we put in for static IP over DSL to deal with the problems, granted some of the problems we have are due to the Telkom ordering system, but they don't manifest themselves in any other network (including fibre providers besides Telkom/Openserve).)

enough this year ranger :-) (cheers for all your continued effort!)

tomorrow will take care of itself!

hva orsim one!

I'm in a similar position in that the exclusive fibre ISP (not HC) for our apartment block makes it mandatory to use their router. Instead of the NAT'ing approach, I used the info in the below post to test it out on my ADSL line to see if I could use an external router whilst having pfsense manage the network.

It seems far simpler than NAT'ing, is there any problems/issues with this approach? I understand I lose the ability to manage the internet connection (DNS, etc), and it's another hop between my devices and the internet.

Is this relative to Vumatel? It sounds like a unique situation?

No, not Vumatel. The ISP is called PC networks, and are using the Cape Town City fibre backbone.

The point is that the ISP is giving no option but to use their router, and I'm trying to get a way for it to work with my pfsense setup.

Yeah no reason they shouldn't be able to have things setup in a way that you can use your own router.

I understand their is no technical reason, but they use the on site router to assign the traffic rules for QOS on their network (I have no problems with this), this is why it's mandatory to use their router. They will not give out the PPOE connection details to put in my pfsense router.

They could just do PPPoE to manage that, can they not just forward all traffic to an internal IP that you can assign on the PF Sense side?

Probably. But my pfsense knowledge is pretty weak. Hence my question as to what is a simple setup for an ISP which makes it mandatory to use their router, whilst I retain pfsense for the majority of the management.

My main reason for pfsense is to have a VPN connection for specific IP's on the network, and using of pfBlockerNG for as blocking.

So just tell them you need some form of public IP facing service, whether it be IP or PPP or a Natted service, they should be able to do something to assist.
