Vumatel with own router?

They said it is to create the L2TP tunnel so that you are provisioned adequate bandwidth (speed you signed up for)...
I don't really understand how it works by them, but I gave it a pass as I don't need any more devices on premise...

None of that with any other vuma ISPs.

Hmm that would make sense. I keep forgetting that some ISPs don't meter traffic on vuma :)

^ Basically they "harden" your router's config/keep control cause most people don't password protect/leave vulnerable. Granny proof. But there are other choices which I took.
 
Well, gone with HC and working well. Got all the ports forwarded to my router, so all good. Slight delay in DNS initially, until I changed my routers DNS to point directly to HC and Google for backup.

All internal port forwarding/NAT'ing working like a charm. Using a D-Link 2750U White for now, which has a WAN port, connected to the HC Mikrotik.

Hit full speed at 20 Mbps, and all is running well. Installation dude was very friendly and did all the config I requested.

Let's see how things pan out.

Why dont you just DMZ everything to your router. This all seems like a very round-a-bout way of doing things...

Yeah, I ended up cancelling my service with Home Connect. For what it is worth, there is apparently a 7 day cooling off period where you can cancel your subscription, and are not liable for the R999 signup fee. (That might just be a Vumatel thing, though)

why did you cancel?
 
I decided I was not interested in whatever reason they had for retaining control over their router. Without their router, I was stuck with 10Mbps service (symmetric), which was supposed to go up to 20/20 when using their router.

I never actually used their router at all on the fibre line. (I did plug it in to my own network to see what it did, and found that it established an L2TP tunnel to their server, as well as connecting to Mikrotik's cloud management service.)

Bloody hell - they screwed me around with this then :mad:

I cancelled after one day as I didn't know that it was "compulsory" to have their own router and they "did me a favour" as they said and I had to pay R999 as that is what Vumatel will charge them

I will advise everyone I know to avoid this company :mad:
