VW Amarok Pricing?

I went for the Launch in Midrand, test drove it and sad to say I prefer the Toyota any day. VW should have invested the money elsewhere.

don't worry the VW salesmen will be here soon to convince us this is another perfect VW :D

j/k

Its overpriced and tbh pretty bland on the outside..

Apparently the interior is better than anything else in its market, but still R400k for a bakkie is mental money.

Saw one on the weekend.... not as pretty in real-life, prefer the Hilux :)

Agree 100% here. Everyone else around me seems to disagree though... I was very excited for it to be launched, because it looked all awesome in the pictures. In the metal though, it was a real let-down.

What I don't get is why some people buy 4x4's and use them for daily commuting on smooth tar roads without ever going off road.
What's the advantage of driving something that is big, heavy, slow, polluting and expensive, to and from work every day?

A Hyundai i20 1.6 will run circles around the Amarok and cost a fraction of the price to purchase and run.
Maybe it's a status symbol or a "let me throw my weight around on the road" thing.

So much for people wanting to do their bit to save the environment ... :(

Agreed, although Ive only seen base models arond, none of the decent specced Amoraks on the road.

I suppose.

saw pics on facebook of one of my friends taking one offroading on one of those farm trails - ended up getting stuck in the mud and needing to be pulled out by an Isuzu or something :p

Also saw one this weekend, and it was a top of the range model.. looked pretty bland tbh...

the amorak is an overrated wannabe, until its proven to be HILUX tough i wont go near it, not keen on the styling either.

With you on that one. It's become a status symbol more than anything else. For a lot of people status has replaced logic in the equation. It's a pretty vehicle, but too large and expensive for daily commuting in my opinion.

That said, it makes more sense to me than an SUV. I'm still trying to see the sense in those. Too expensive to use in the bush, too large to be convenient on the daily traffic jams... And I wouldn't want to put my garden rubbish into its boot! :-P

Probably because they have more uses than just off-roading?

Too large and expensive? For who, obviously not the people who have them? Do you also say super-cars are too fast and expensive?

I think you may want to check just how tough the NEW Hilux's are.. I've heard more than my fair share of bad stories about the new one....

Was being the support vehicle for the Dakar not proof enough that it is tough?

Sounds like some cheap Chinese knock-off, which would suck. However the Amarok is easily a match for the Hilux and surpasses it in a number of areas, most notably in that it can climb a 45 degree incline with a full 1-ton payload. I wouldn't even try that in a Hilux. ;)

I'll put anything on the Hilux outlasting the Amarok in tough conditions....

Thats really underestimating a very powerful brand without even knowing anything about the car...
The Hilux is good, but dont underestimate the Germans.

Granted the Hilux has a well-deserved reputation for toughness, but I'd be tempted to take that bet. VW did near 3,000,000km of testing with a couple of Amaroks based at Gerotek - only one of many testing sites around the world - with no more hassle than one would expect in pre-production.

Tastes vary so of course one is perfectly entitled to prefer one car over another, but to deny that the Amarok is an immensely capable 4x4 would be daft. Tell your friend he obviously can't drive off-road for ****. :p

This is a new vehicle though - the Hilux has already proven itself... it even drove to the north pole.
