VW Polo 1.4 - how does it pull?

VW Polo 1.4 - how does it pull? When driving a 1.4, YOU DON'T ASK SUCH QUESTIONS!

The Polo 1.4i is pretty nippy and light on gas, goes like a bomb for what it is.. You dont really need more unless you have a heavy foot

I drive a 2006 1.4 polo. It is fine for town even up here in the highveld. But you need to work the gears a bit to get it to perform. People who say it is too underpowered haven't mastered the gear changes yet. That said, it does have decent low down torque, so you can drive around all day never exceeding 3000 rpm in any gear if you want to cruise around. Overtaking on the highway is a bit sluggish and hills require anticipation. Fuel economy is fine at 7-8L/100km in town. I would definitely spring extra for a 1.6 though. It makes driving less 'work'. The only real power killer is the aircon. I call it the "powerboost" button because when it is off, you feel a big difference.

I have been looking at the polo as well, but i think getting a 1.4 will end up costing me more on gas (my driving style is not old fart like :P) so i rate i will end up revving that 1.4 way too much.

So my previous post...having owned a 1.4 and a 1.6, the 1.6 consumption is miles better!

Also got a bloody ticket in the 1.4 on the way UP Van Reenens, so it's no slouch!

Why not test drive the 1.4 and1.6? And while you're at it, some other cars in your price range :)

AFAIK most of the more basic VW engines (the 1.4 and 1.6) aren't multi-valve (I think they are 2 valves per cylinder, 8v), while similar Toyota engines are multi-valve (16v). Thats why the VWs have more low down torque, while the toyotas need to be revved more to start pulling decently. I think the low down torque makes the cars more relaxing and pleasant to drive. The multi valves typically make more power though, bu at high revs only.

Well to answer your question.
Toyota is better built than VW.
VW and Toyota are the highest on the "Affirmative shopping list"

Does it HAVE to be Polo or Toyota?
Can I ask this... What is your budget. Maximum. Much better question I think ;)

Honda Jazz? MUCH MUCH better car than both imho.
Suzuki Swift?
Ford Fiesta?
Older shape Corsa... maybe you can even get a nice 1.8 GSI?
Corsa Sedan shape maybe?

All depends on the budget though.

Well obviously he is not too concerned about looks if he is considering a Toyota now is he?

Swift imho is much better looking than the Polo and MUCH better specced not to mention that you will have something a bit more special than a Polo. Polo's are so boring and me too. Not bad looking no, but really boring and completely overpriced for what you get.

But yeah, asking what car is like asking what chick. It's all relevant. And everyone will have a different opinion and experiences.
BTW our whole family at one stage drove VW's. Some still do.

If its a 1.6 comfortline, I suggest you go for that. Standard 1.6 then you should stick with the 1.4.
