VW Polo and hijacking

Last edited:
I had a Polo for 3 years and a golf for 4 years now. Never worried about hijacking or did anything different to when driving any other car

Drove a silver Polo throughout 2015 and 2016. Never had any issues and never did anything differently.

Except...the hijacking statistics is the only thing standing in the way of me buying one. How have you Polo drivers adapted to the situation? Just being more 'aware' as a driver and avoid driving at night? I feel like ruling out a Polo takes me back to square one and I may have to reevaluate the type of vehicle is like to get (hatchback in that price range), while at the same time I wouldn't want to meet a guy with a gun in my driveway either.

"Statistics". The VW and Toyotas are at the top of the list, because they sell the most. Does that mean you *will* get hijacked? No. Just like the Hilux and the Fortuner that also tops the sales charts, they will be at the top of the list. The Chev Spark, Ford Fiesta, 3 series BMW, Ford Figo and Toyota Etios are also some of the favourites. If you're at the wrong place, at the wrong time with any of the "wrong" brands, you stand a chance of being hijacked.

Buy a Subaru they don't get stolen or jacked

Depends who you ask. Prospective & all that.

Personally WC does not have a hijacking issue to the extent of GP. Not saying it does not exist obviously.

Hijacking in WC is usually conducted in the quiet hours by druggies needing a lift to their dealers.

Correct.

Subaru selling roughly 1.3% of what VW sells and 0.8% of what Toyota sells per month the chances are low, because there's also a very small resale market. It's illegal, but it's still economics.

The scoobies are reliable, safe and that awd makes for a stunning drive.

Remind me again how much a clutch costs to replace at the dealership? Oh, and a major service?

They are not more expensive to maintain than any normal car. Spark plugs are only changed every 100 000 km. timing belt every 90 000 km. My wrx hatch services was 1800 to 2500 mayor service R12 000. clutches are 8000 at the dealer. So how does that cost more than a normal car.

Polo gti dsg megatronics box R30 000 with dsg replacement coming in at R80 000
Polo vivo radiator fan R4000
Hondas latest models brake pads coming in at R6000 for a set
My golf 4 wiper motor at the dealer was 6k and had to be programmed in to work.

My subarus cost me less than my other cars

How is the fuel consumption? I think you might be onto something, with proper maintenance almost all cars nowadays are reliable.

my 2 l GT wagon got 600 km on 45l and
my hatch wrx 550 km on 50 l

The modified one we wont mention.

That's not to bad, my 1 litre get around 500 to 600 km per tank (30 to 35 L) around town in heavy traffic, more when traffic lets up. Open road I don't really know. My 2 l diesel averages around 7.5 around town, short distances and 5.2 to 5.8 open road. I did just over 1000 km on the last 75 litre tank going to Oudtshoorn and back in one day, driving way faster than I usually would because I was tired and just wanted to get the trip over with.

I might look at Subaru next time I buy, although I am not to sure I like their styling and interiors.

If you've loved it, it has ticked your boxes, screw the hijacking stats. Honestly I wouldn't let that stop me from buying a car, just get it insured, fit a tracker and you're at least good if something happens.

R28K for clutch at dealership on my Fiesta ST. Had it all done + a service at "My guy" for R7500

Well, at the end I decided to go for a Kia Rio Tec. Thanks for the input everyone :)

More to this, make sure it is insured at RETAIL Value, that way even if something happens, they will pay you out the same as what the car costs brand new.

If you are buying a high risk car, just ensure you have the best insurance on it to soften the blow if anything happens.

Heck, I insure any car at Retail, just in case.
