Hi guys

I have a VW Polo 2.0 in for major service at a dealership in Cape Town. They mentioned that the cam-belt looks like it needs replacing, and that usually when they do that for this vehicle, they replace the water pump at the same time (apparently it can get damaged during the job?).

The vehicle has done just over 110000km.

They quoted R7300 incl. VAT for the parts and labour (cam-belt and water pump).

Does this sound like a reasonable price? If not, does anyone have a recommendation for good mechanics in Cape Town, preferably specialising in VW, who could do the job for better value.

TIA

For a dealership, that price sounds reasonable for the cambelt + waterpump.

Good grief, glad I work on my own cars.

I have the Cam belt from my VW Polo 2.0. It has 46 000 KM on it. Apparently it needs to be replaced at 100 000 KM, but my 5 year service was when I had 46 000 KM, so they just replaced it then

I've got a really good VW mechanic that does my entire family's cars, no BS and really good rates. Mark's Auto, on the side of the Rondebosch Common, the little retro BP Petrol station that looks like its part of a house just before Rustenberg Girls High School.

I'd definitely recommend him, he'll tell you if the Dealership is trying to milk you.

Thanks a lot for that, I spoke to Mark. He quoted me R1800 all incl for just the cambelt, and if the waterpump needs replacement, then up to R2800.

He said the parts are out of the same factory, in a different box/brand.. so I guess not official.

It sounds so much cheaper, almost too good to be true.

Does anyone have any recommendations on that vs the dealership?

Thanks guys

Go to a private garage and buy your own spares from Goldwagen. Yes the dealership is right to change cambelt with waterpump.

Not too good to be true, that's just how much a dealership is screwing you. If you're not persisting warranty/motor plan, there's no reason to go to Dealership if you have a reliable mechanic.

Anyway, I've been using him for 4 years now, rest of the family for almost 12 years. Never an issue, if there ever was, he sets it right - good old fashion reliable business.

My sister's VW Polo 2.0 had trouble with the water pump at similar milage to yours. The water pump pully is aparently plastic on the polo 2.0 and cracks over time, warranting replacement.

I kinda like the Polo 2.0. Yes old tech low compression engine but afaik no other car in that size that has a relatively "big" engine bar performance warm/hot hatches that cost sustainably more.

They hold their value very well also.
