You cant compare with engine sizes the old 1.4 puts out 63 kilowatts and the new 1.4 110kW - my 96kilowatt Polo can take a mountain pass in 5th sometimes 4th with 4 people in the car with the AC on.

Initially, but that has changed over the past 4 years.
Ask anyone driving a 1983 3 cylinder Charade how long a 3 cylinder lasts....you can give it to your grandchildren!

I was talking about the 55KW 1.0, the current polo 1.4 is 63KW N/A so that cant be compared to the new 1.4Tsi or even your 96KW(which is most likely a tdi?) .
The BlueMotion model gets a new turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine producing 66kW.
The petrol-powered BlueMotion is expected to return a combined 4.1L/100km.
This will be a gem. Turbo for torque and a lovely 3 cylinder engine note like a rougher version of a BMW Straight 6.

Why is the posted pic one of the old outgoing model rather than the new one?
Also, while the power might seem low, people should remember that torque is what's important with situations like going uphill or pulling along with more people. These engines are all turbo'd and VW almost always use turbos that give low down torque, so chances are that even that little 1.0 might pull on par with the current 1.6 in a steep hillclimb.

The VW engine will last a lot longer than that highly strung Ford 1.0 engine.
I dunno hey. Need to constantly thrash the VW engine to just make it move. Ford you can cruise without putting strain on the motor, so I think the Ford will outlast the VW.

I'm not sure, a boosted low capacity engine would pose more of a risk IMHO. Guess time will tell once we look back on reliability a few years from now.

Exactly this.
Ford even stated that their highly strung little EccoBoost engines can last up to 250,000km.
Most VW engines are capable of doing double that distance if not more.

You can compare engine sizes as long as you compare engine types as well.
A boosted engine of the same capacity as a normally aspirated engine will always have more power, but will have other drawbacks like higher maintenance and/or reliability costs as well as being heavier on fuel in most cases.
