... due in South Africa during the second half of 2014, with an upgrade that's more 'inside' than 'on top'.

NEW LOOK
That's not to say that it's indistinguishable from the current Polo. Look closely and you'll see a new grille which now has two slats (previously one) and a chrome bar that runs along the bottom. For the first time in this class, buyers can order LED headlights. The front and rear bumpers are also new, as are the taillights, and the new look is rounded off by five fresh alloy wheel designs.

ADVANCED ENGINES
The big 'inside' news is a brand new range of three- and four-cylinder turbocharged engines that offer efficiency gains of up to 21 percent - although our contact at VWSA could not confirm whether the new motors will be fitted to local models.

European customers can choose between two 1-litre three-cylinder engines (with 44 or 55kW), two 1.2-litre four-cylinder units (66 or 81kW) and a 1.4-litre with 110kW on command. A new GTI version, with more power, will be announced at a later date.

On the diesel front, VW offers a choice between two new 1.4-litre three-cylinder TDI motors, offering output levels of 55kW and 66kW.

ADJUSTABLE DAMPERS
Other beneath-the-skin changes are a new electromechanical steering system that offers improved efficiency and a more precise feel, and the availability of electronically-controlled dampers with two settings.

SAFETY GADGETS
For improved safety and geek-cred, the upgrade sees a raft of higher-end features filtering down to the Polo, such as the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System (standard in Europe), the Driver Alert System, Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Automatic Cruise Control.

SMARTER CABIN
Finally, the cabin furniture receives a makeover in the form of a new steering wheel, completely redesigned instruments, new ventilation controls and an improved centre console.

What's more, the Polo range gains VW's latest modular infotainment system, featuring a touch-screen with a function that reacts to wiping movements by the fingers, as per smart-phones.

How are you suppose to up hill with this motor!

The 1.4 tsi , will be nice hope we get in south africa

It's called a gearbox.

And it's hardly that unusual it's just a smaller engine now. 10 years ago 55kw was about average for this class in a 1.4 and cars were much heavier back then as well.

So that 55kw 1.0 will be a beast compared to a 2001 Opel Corsa for instance.

 What happened to the 1.6 TDI? Looks like the 81 kW 1.2 TSI is the one to go for. Also hope they've equipped these models with temperature gauges.

I like!! :D

I could easily live with any one of them thank you!

Correct - there's nothing wrong with 55kw - it won't be a ball of fire, but it won't be a slug either.

We have all become used to 120 plus Kw that we have forgotten that EVERYONE used to drive cars with far less power, and we could even climb up hills :p

The famous 3 litre V6 Cortina that everyone wanted to dice with in the 70's had a whole 103 kW, that could be boosted to 110kW with a banana branch manifold and a different carb!!!

Wait, the current model does not have a temperature gauge?

As brilliant as this car is, and it is, there is just so many similar alternatives that are better value for the same money, especially from the Koreans and lately from Ford/Renault. This facelift is squarely aimed at fleet buyers IMO.

But this car is heavier than a 2001 corsa and the current 1.4 polo with the ac on struggles up a steep hill in 1st gear .

It does look a lot nicer now but prices are sure to be a lot more.

Don't see the point of driving anything with less than 120kw. Do you even 0 to 100km/h in less than 10 seconds bro? :p

Some of my most fond driving memories come from a 1.3L 51kw Ford Ka, agree with you that 55kw is plenty if you know how to use it.

New pricing released?
Probably slightly more expensive. Be aware as VWSA typically, though skillfully, will strip out standard equipment, or substitutes it with less premium options, available on the pre-facelift one. The 1.4 TDi 66KW might cost the same at the current 1.6 TDi, as an example.

Very few new cars come with temp gauges
How much torque?

Lots ;) :p

This was my point, which you obviously missed - expecting any decent car to have 120 plus kW is just stupid. Also freaking about 0 to 100 times - stupid.
We have far too many people killing themselves with too much power on our roads anyway!

I don't think you understood the use of the tongue smile to indicate sarcasm. I'm agreeing with you.

Isn't it true that the current gen Polos in SA use the same engines from the previous gen

Initially, but that has changed over the past 4 years.
Yes it is amazing for a 1.0 to boost that Kw!! Just don't know how long that small 3 cylinder engine will last.
Ask anyone driving a 1983 3 cylinder Charade how long a 3 cylinder lasts....you can give it to your grandchildren! ;)
