VW Stereo Safe Mode

The radio code can be anything from 0001 to 9999 and is cross-linked with the car's VIN into which it was fitted during production...

I know - found apps which takes the serial number and vin combination and spits out about four possible codes.

As in example: http://www.radio-code.com/Volk-Pay-Page-radio-code.htm

Although, the above is a paid service - some digging and you can find little apps to do it.

Go to a sound install shop tell them to remove the radio, will take less than a minute. The code is on top of the deck.
Give VW the code and VIN don't give them anything else ie bank details and get the code. 189 is still to much.

Lol maybe the first quote was for a new radio, the plank on the phone probably misunderstood. R189 sounds more reasonable, but i would still demand them to do it free of charge as it is a hidden defect that you can take back. The new consumer protection act is your friend. Speak to the dealer manager and Im sure it will be done for free. If all else fails tell them about Hellopeter

Thanks Guys...I managed to get the code from dealer...the sales man at TopGear Auto went all out to get it for me...the previous owner did have but did not had it in with the car manual as it is advised to put the code in a safe place, I guess she forgot about it...

This thing with the codes...

Crackers(PC apps) don't work because they are so far behind the new models...

The easiest way is to pay for the code, or if you are up for a bit of soldering, remove the EEPROM and reprogram it with a dump from the internet.

Opel owners face the same problem... I however, have EEPROM dumps for those cars with default codes of 0000

Rouxenator gonna love this!

I would have, but its not a VW specific problem and I have heard similarly insane quotes when you have to get some GM Tech2 "work" done on modern CANBUS cars from GM.
Hope the guy can get it sorted because a good sound system is vitally important in a Citi. It is actually one of the few things you can enjoy in that car.
