VW tests promising solid-state battery

Volkswagen AG said its battery startup has seen promising results with solid-state cells for electric vehicles, a win for the German carmaker as it pushes to make EVs more efficient and less expensive.

A solid-state prototype from VW’s US partner QuantumScape Corp. “significantly exceeded” industry targets in recent tests, the carmaker said Wednesday in a statement.

I guess a step in the right direction but there still is the controversial topic of the real impact on the environment that EV's pose. Greenies only see a zero emission car silently driving by, not the environmental impact for the minerals used for batteries or the power for the over 1000 recharges a battery pack will use before it must be replaced with another battery pack that used minerals mined from the earth.

Keep working at it, I'll be ready to buy an EV in 2032. For now, not interested.

Ever heard of recycling?

I thinking of 2028 :p Current car is only 2 years, so another 4 years driving this one is fine.
Well, I am buying a bakkie in the next four months, so, I am going to wait a bit more.

Let us know when this is commercially available in the 2030's or so... We're not gonna see it in a VW for at least 10 years.

The only breakthrough I am waiting for is for the battery model to cost less than 15% more than the ICE model.

Another BS argument by people that don't like to see fossil fuels go away.

When a battery is not appropriate for a car it goes to stationary storage. After that it will be recycled. Recycling is super efficient, because the things that have a big environmental impact also tend to be expensive so there is a lot of incentive to recycle it.

And the you have to say - environmental impact against what? You cannot recycle petrol that you have burned. You have a bunch of particulate polution. And let's not talk about the nasties during extraction and refinement. And rare minerals are used all over in ICE vehicles (but that is not an issue because they are heavily recycled).

The "EVs" cause pollution is a red herring. Yes they do have an impact (because anything you do has an impact) but it is a hell of a lot less than ICE vehicles.

But back in the day people probably argued in favor of the horse instead of cars because horses reproduce, cars don't and you can't feed your car grass from the side of the road. But the world changed even if some people want to stay stuck in the past. Luckily arguing over the Internet is not going to determine the change. It will happen.
