VW UP! Move - hijack risk?

Thanks for all the responses (some of them made me laugh :)

Seems like the UP! is a low-risk car, going to test drive this weekend...

You are going to love it ... it is a solid built, well round little commuter ... I love driving my up! more than my wife's Disco 4 :)

I know of someone that won a VW Move Up in a recent Checkers in-store competition and wants to sell it. White. It's got 200km on the clock and they want R160000. They only drove it from Pretoria to fetch it and then parked it in the garage ever since.

The Up! is the only VW I consider worthy and of all their products the lowest hijack risk.

Do you know what extras are on it (I am assuming not a lot seeing that it was a prize)

Is their any specific reason you dislike VW this much? Wondered about that for a long time. The Up! is a good car, my wife has one, but I would not consider it VW's best car. Maybe you have to try and test drive one their newer models. Really not bad. The only VW's I would still steer clear of (besides the Vivo) is their Tsi's, nice engines but I'm not entirely convinced about their reliability.

That is actually a thread on it's own - but it boils down to their misleading name. They are no longer a Wagen that the Volk can afford. Why have Audi as a premium brand when you are trying to pitch VW as a premium brand too? Of all the car makes they are the only one with a misleading name. I also dislike their bland and boring styling and people who think they are great cars, they are not, as a kid my family had a couple of VWs and they are dodgy AF. Life got much better when my folks switched to Mercedes. VW is also oh-so common, people with no soul or imagination buy them.

That said I like the Up! because it is a true VW - it is small and affordable unlike the rest of the product line.

The name might have started out as that, but it is not now, that I will agree with. Their styling also isn't everyone's cup of tea, but that comes down to personal taste.

I've had a few VW's, and besides the Tsi Jetta I had they were all really reliable. I have two VW's at the moment, neither of which I would hesitate to do a long trip in without worry. I'm not sure about older VW's, I've never had an old one.

But if you base your opinion on old cars then you might really want to consider test driving one of the new models, without any preconceived ideas. You might be pleasantly surprised. When I replace my current cars I won't necessarily buy VW again, but considering the service I have received from NTTVW, the probably made me a client for life, IF they keep that up.

Edit: on the Up!, it is a really good car, but it is very under powered, needs a few more KW's, and that is very frustrating sometimes and might just be the reason that we will trade it in before the end of the year.

Hijack risk will be much much lower a Polo (Vivo).

Don't let supposed hijack risk be your main deciding factor when purchasing a vehicle.

The Up is horrible, its worse than getting a CITI golf. Brio is way better, I've driven all these entry level monsters round as rentals and the UP is the worst by far, close competition with the i10 but has this horrible echo in the back that makes you feel like you are driving around a plastic bucket.

Brio is better???? 0.o How about the fact that the Brio just has ABS, while the VW Up has ESP? In that class of car it's unheard of. Do you have any idea of what a lifesaver that ESP is? Ever watched any safety videos? Do you realise that you cannot sell a car in Europe without ESP, it's regarded to be that important to safety?

I haven't driven a brio yet, so can't comment on that. But the Up! is really good for a small car. Feels like a bigger car actually. And although all of these small cars are ugly, the Brio just take that to a whole new level. It just looks awkward.

No, my wife has a pre-facelift three door, with the 15 inch mags wheels, sunroof, and the normal radio. Standard further than that. What is this maps & more?

Basically a Garmin GPS specifically for the up, providing SD card reader, bluetooth, gps, traffic updates and other computer functions

Ok, you have that on your car? Would you mind to post a pic. Sounds interesting.
 
Whilst a particular brand of car has a risk of hijack, one must also consider your place of residence.
Should you reside in a rural town away from a metropolitan crime infested shyte hole, the hijack element would have little weight in a buying decision.
Having said that: I would rather have a Swift 1.2GL (which I have) as a runaround than an UP.

Perhaps someone on this forum can enlighten us plebs as to a premium loading on the high risk hijacking vehicles?
What is the insurance installment loading on a Vivo compared to a Tata (or something similar), assuming a similar purchase price.
