W@P's Solar System

How many of you did the installation yourselves? How much does the installation usually cost?
The labor portion of my quote was R14k remember this is job specific and most likely increased.

I highly highly advise that you get a professional to do the work. If you spending this kind of money that R14k is a drop in the ocean. Its also one hell of a job

I can tell you with certainty that if I attempted a diy job it would not look like this

Im very capable when it comes to installation of things and solar doesn’t scare me.

The amount of work though and following all the compliance guidelines completely put me off. Not to mention the additional work I had to get done.

Happy to pay the labour to get it done.

DIY isn't actually difficult if you know your way with tools and electrical cabling, its the compliance that will be a pain, especially when you call someone in to certify and they decide to rip you a new one and charge you to redo everything.

Yea true, I take a view of getting professional service for the installation for safety aspects. DIY and you not home and something goes wrong...

I do medium to large network installations as well so hard grafting with a neat outcome is not an issue. Compliance to standards for safety is my concern. Burning the house down because of 1 small yet seemingly insignificant mistake is not something I would like to risk.

It depends exactly on what needs to be done (may need to split DB and loads), and distances of the components from one another. No install is the same. Also. sometimes the existing install isn't up to snuff and needs remedial work that the solar install will highlight. Best to get a quote or two from a reliable source/s.

Good selection. I would also like to have a look.

Steve gave me a lot of settings to update on the battery side but comparison is always a good thing.

See below and note the following:

Stefan helped set all the technical settings, I have 3 hubbles. I intend to use them "into the ground". Getting an extra year out is not my goal to use as little eskom power as possible is. By the time they need to be replaced I think its safe to assume battery tech will be cheaper. Even though 2% is set as my low end I typically end the morning at 15-20%.

Your timer setup intrigues me.
You basically run off batteries 100% when the PV isn't enough to power the load?

Yup grid is physically switched off 95% of the time. I only up these amounts and connect the grid when there is load shedding its very overcast and we have the domestic. Look here - many days will be 0 grid usage.

I will take from the battery first before switching on the grid I understand the loads enough to know when the grid needs to be connected (in extreme cases) I wasnt aiming for "off the grid" but im trying it. The small purple days were trickle days then I was like screw it and turned the switch to the grid off :P

if your battery is charged it will just match your load.

You only have one battery its very likely that you done

@AchmatK will be pumping all the time as he exports to the grid

See below I have three and Im typically done midday and then it matches the load the rest of the day

Pls explain how the Gen change over works now that solar is installed.
I have a gen switch over and was wondering what the options are when adding solar.
Will the generator output be added to the solar when running?
