Wa Uunet

Everyone seems to have missed the post earlier where someone stated that it isnt BLOCKED its SHAPED.

35kb/s is a problem how?

Well things are looking bleek. UUNet capped the torrents to make things better and now for me they are worse! I can live without bittorrent. eDonkey doesn't work anymore and pings to SGS servers well they suck too. Sitting at 200-300ms right now, was great yesterday though. Can't play games during the day, so they took away p2p and didn't give me what I wanted, low pings to SGS. Well if pings don't get better soon I am gonna cancel and go with a 30GB Axxess account, 30GB international and uncapped local sounds good right now.

Come now UUNet where are my low pings?

Again you took what I said out of context. I didn't mention anything about cars, did I ?!

Now look. You knew from the beginning that UUNET shapes P2P. Its even there on webafrica's website! Dont tell me they took away something for which you pay, or they did something for which you pay. Infact, they just started to implement something which they shouldve done in the first place, which they said they were going to do in the first place!

but how can you boast about an uncapped service if you shape p2p in a way that you block it.

well saix lets me dl at full speed from p2p where the shaping comes in i dunno.

30 gigs with great pings local p2p and bittorent must be better than uncapped with no p2p bad local pings and no bittorent, what is the use of uunet if that is the case?

I have no problem if they "Take Something Away" but it did not solve my problem of high pings for local and that is what I need for SGS, If they can't fix it what is the point in shaping p2p so heavily?

i dunno i still think that 30 gigs for 580 or 599 sounds a whole lot better to me
plus its way faster, may be saix but there isnt anything better :(

I agree with Tinuva here, even though I'm not a UUNET customer.

On the Web Africa website, it does indeed say P2P is going to be shaped - Bit Torrent is part of this 'P2P' so you can't really complain if it is slow.

Secondly, your analogies are flawed as Tinuva correctly stated. There are lots of restaurants in SA..unlike the internet in which there are 3 providers [Telkom, UUNET, IS] that have the correct network infrastructure that provide internet services and 1 international bandwidth provider who have a monopoly on it, unlike restaurants.

I also agree with Angellus - if they take something to 'improve the service' then it should be improved like pings on SGS.

Well pings back to 350ms local. Anyhoo I am with UUNet till 6 June.

killadoob that 30gb from axxess is starting to look better and better and better and better and better and better and better and better and better and better!!
Well you get the idea. ;)

How are P2P(eDonkey/BT) speeds on axxess? Once you change the port I mean.

I see no problems regarding pings, either local nor international... international pings are either on par or better with Telkom's unshaped and local is sub < 60ms.

As for shaping, Celemasiko, I understand your frustration, but this product was never designed for P2P/Torrents, and this has been indicated multiple times. No guarantees were ever made regarding it, and if you're looking for guaranteed bandwidth for BitTorrent then you're best off getting a Diginet line from Telkom for a couple of grand a month. In an ideal world we would all be flying at multiple mbits/s with no limitations, but the climate being as it is means that it is not cost effective for UUNet to provide unlimited BitTorrent traffic on their network. The cost to them becomes far too great to justify providing the product primarily due to Telkom and the rates they charge.

Naturally it comes down to money, reducing BitTorrent traffic makes it immediately more viable for them than keeping it enabled. This is not a perfect world and what you're looking for is a perfect world in which you can do what you want when you want. It unfortunately doesn't work this way, purely because of cost. If bandwidth cost next to nothing here in South Africa, as it does in countries such as the US and UK, then naturally we would see more diverse products, faster speeds and less restrictions, but that's years away. At a 30:1 contention ratio you are paying for a 30th of the maximum bandwidth the account supports (in this case 512K), you could say you are paying for a dedicated 30th (1:1), at 512K therefore the guarantee can only be placed at approx. 17K (slower than a modem) when the link is running at peak. Unfortunately, when using BitTorrent you have people using substantially more than their alotted 17K, meaning it eats into everyone elses bandwidth. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, as you have a minority of high bandwidth users that get subsidised by the majority of low bandwidth users and generally everyone is happy because the low bandwidth users see no decrease in performance while the high bandwidth users can happily download away at maximum speeds.

BitTorrent changes this, it's a far more aggressive application than, lets say, FTP or HTTP downloads (even if you used something such as FlashGet - BitTorrent is way worse) and has a habit of substantially degrading the network for other users. UUNet isn't the only ISP to see this problem, Telkom experiences it too (though certainly not as badly) as will IS (though their pricing makes it less desirable for home users), and so do many international ISP's. The difference comes in regarding US ISP's and SA ISP's that they can afford many times more bandwidth than we can and they can therefore handle the load far better than we can.

change the port?

i dunno i got a 30 gig account with allyoucaneat
i think its r 580 for 30 gigs
axxess and allyoucaneat offer same thing

i got adsl 384 and am download from edonkey at 31.8 now doesnt drop either

but dont download a file if their is 1 source 100 or more is good means you will get it

i dont know how to use bit i find edonkey is so much easier but speeds are awesome and gaming on sgs servers never ping higher than 30ms.

Thanx Killadoob, think I might convert to the 30GB CAP "Dark Side" at the end of my 3 month subscription with WebAfrica. I must say Webafrica has not been a problem once it's just UUNet. Will miss being uncapped.

Actually.

I just got back home. local pings 30ms. International pings in cmd prompt a little higher than unshaped saix account
BUT
in worldofwarcraft game on US servers...my ping is 680ms with saix unshaped, its 350-550ms with uunet account...sadly with uunet every 30mins it somehow disc my Worldofwarcraft game...its not half bad.

As for downloads, just started a download to a xdcc bot from US..getting 48k/s while reading this forum. To me this is a great service. Now I actually wonder if I made a mistake canceling my uunet account, it ends 28th i think LGetting told what I can or can't do with a connection I paid for is not what I really want. If tomorrow I decide to VPN and/or do whatever on a port that nobody would think of using, why should I be negatively impacted for that?:(

your getting 48k/s a sec for web pages and you find this great. its a webpage.
give me 48 k/s uncapped on p2p would be great

please killadoob, i know people say you are stupid, but please dont prove them correct!

first of all. irc is a chat server you connect to. xdcc bots also connect to these servers. port 6667 is the standard port for the irc server (this is not what i would call http, as its a different protocol and port!!)

second of all, its closer to p2p, because even if the irc server die, the download from the xdcc bot to me will still continiou as it doesnt use the central server to send the file through it, but instead directly to me. I call this great, cause I can get anything from movies to anime to whatever without ads/porn/forced_banner_clicking ect.

I call this great. Infact, my xdcc bot downloads on telkom's shaped adsl was never this great!

well maybe mention that before you say i must prove ppl correct :)
what irc server is this btw i remember i think i used to do the same thing cept i had 56k

would mirc work for this?

but is that as easy as finding a backstreet boys song that was released in the us 2 days ago?

Now look. You knew from the beginning that UUNET shapes P2P. \

There is a difference between shaping, which I accept and blocking. What they tried was blocking. Nice to have enough knowledge to work around.

P2P Shaping has been tried worldwide with NO success.

btw. the car served as an example!!!

@ Warichard,

when I signed with UUNET I have accepted the shaping, thats not the point. I can live with a slow speed as long others have also enough bandwith as well. But whats happen now, they try to BLOCK not only to shape. And this is a bad move.

btw. do you know how many million $ US Universities have spend for an unsuccessfull attempt to block BT? With more then 10.000.000 seeders its virtually impossible, I can guarantee...

Its better to find a solution then starting to fiddle around with costfull und and at the end of the day unsuccessfull tries of blocking
ONCE MORE, MAKE THOSE WHO WANTS TO HAVE MORE TRAFFIC PAY PER MB OVER LETS SAY 30 GB AND THE PROBLEM IS NO LONGER EXISTANT. WHEN YOU GO TO GRAB INSIDE SOMEBODY'S VALLET THEY WILL THINK TWICE.
But as long the egg wants to be more intelligent then the chicken there is no peace.

@ Celemasiko - nice to have you back.

A saving grace is the certain knowledge that someone will always find a way to get around restrictions. What the isp’s have to realize is that efficiency will only increase over time – the only solution is increased bandwidth.

Over the past couple days I’ve seen a general deterioration in my service. Its as simple as that. Now I’ve been a staunch supporter of UUNet and have always advocated giving them time to sort out their issues but that will only stretch so far.

I am happy with uunet as it is atm.
Are you? Your post here would indicate at least some dissatisfaction.
