Does anyone know if it is possible to buy refurb / used WACOM tablets in SA ?

The new prices in SA are beyond crazy.

Lots on eBay -- but then you have to get it here

I was thinking along the lines of an Intuos 3 6x11 which is an older model and sells for about US$ 120 or so

I need it for some GIS / Map tracing work ( there are other brands but apparently WACOM is the only REAL game in town )

Any ideas anyone ?

Did not go as far back as comparing the Intuos3 with the current Intuos5, but compared to the 4 it is pretty much the same. Intuos5 got the Touch feature extra. I order from eBay sellers all the time and never had something get lost in post. Just make sure that you pay through PayPal and you are covered. Any idea how the Bamboo series compare?

I've got the Bamboo Pen & Touch (1st Gen) . It's the 1st and only tablet I've used and I'm pretty happy with it. Thought I'd start small as I get into it. I don't feel my skill level right now validates a bigger upgrade or it could be the lack of features on the Bamboo that is keepin me back :p

Not blaming the tools, but I've read that the higher models have more control whatever else. But overall I'm happy with Bamboo.

Hi,

I actaully have an intuos3 that I never used. Not sure of the size, but it's the big one! (I can find out for you what size exactly) :) Might be willing to sell it if you make a decent offer.

There is resellers in RSA, you just have to look. Nothing comes close to a wacom, you cant compare for example a simple genius tablet to a wacom.

I've got a Bamboo Pen I bought last year that I'm looking to sell. I just haven't been using it as much as I initially thought I would. Let me know if you're interested. It's good as new, still have the box all the spare nibs etc.

The Bamboo Pen can only be interacted with by using the Pen. The Touch and Pen allows one to use your fingers to interact with the tablet as well as it having two (I think) buttons on it for extra functionality.

Obviously this is a completely different product to the Intuous.

I would get the bamboo to start with. I have the small one, and it works fine. Im using it for my studies at The animation school. I reckon if you got the medium sized bamboo, you would fall in love. I know I have.

I've read that most things can be done with the Bamboo, especially photography-related editing.

I'm not sure about the various models at all, what is the difference between the Pen and the Pen & Touch, besides the obvious multi-touch? How are you using it, snugglez?

...and how often do you churn through nibs?

I'm on my 4th nib now, being using it since Aug 2010. Obviously, not that much to be a Wacom pro. I use it mostly for sketches, I do comic book art as a hobby - Also used it a bit for photo manips' , but not that often.

Those Bamboos' in the links are cool. I wanted to sell mine and get one of those cos of the wireless attachment. Mine is the one before and still going strong!

About 2 months ago I spill and broke a glass of cool drink on my Wacom. Gave it a quick wipe down with a clean damp cloth dried it off as best I could and still works perfect. Very good build quality I must say. I really thought it would be done for.

Sounds good

Sounds Interesting

Would it be OK if I sent you a PM ?

( Unless of course the photoholics from ODP have already twisted your arm ? :) )

There's nothing wrong with the Intuos 3. The Intuos 4 added some nice controls and more sensitivity, but you probably won't need the latter. The OLED labels on the buttons and touch wheel (whatever they call it) are very nice though. I actually looked at importing one and the price once shipping and VAT were included was within R100 of the local price. Don't forget to factor those additional costs in.

Ugh, sucks. Tried to register with them and we're not listed under their supported countries. I emailed them to check and indeed they don't ship to South Africa.

I wonder why ?

SA = Greatest consumer rip off country in the World !

Don't go anything but Wacom, you'll only end up regretting it -- they've been the pinnacle of pen computing for many a year, and still the preferred choice of artists, graphic designers, ...

Btw the local SA prices for the Intuous 5 tablets are pretty much the same as they have been for the last years.

Consider that the US prices do not apply to our region, so you should rather be comparing SA with UK prices + shipping + duties + tax.

As these are very specialised devices I.e. used by only a few, the local suppliers cannot take much advantage of bulk shipping or bulk discounts.

For your use case I would suggest you don't buy anything larger than a medium size Intuous tablet, large and XL are big tablets -- they take all of your standard work area I.e. no place for a keyboard or mouse.

Btw you might even want to look at the old Wacom Graphire tablets as opposed to Intuous 3 or 4 (reliable and very cheap second hand, if you can get one.)
