WACS and monopolies

In any market competition is what drives prices down, not just regulation. Namibia has a problem in that it has a large geography and a small population. Not sure that prices are going down there quickly. I read somewhere that they have some of the highest Telecoms costs in the world.

The question is what will this cable do for us ?
 
These guys are everywhere. Just like Telkom, always trying to milk enough money before taking any next step. This is terrorism.

The real difference in South Africa is the presence of multiple South African carriers in the consortium - Neotel, Telkom, Infraco, MTN and Vodacom - and their ability to land the capacity on an open access basis. Also, WACS will be entering a market that already has 3 competing cable systems - SAT-3/SAFE, SEACOM and EASSy.

WACS will be the largest ever cable to land in South Africa (5.12 Tbps design capacity), which translates into lower unit costs, and hence into lower prices when carriers compete to sell the capacity.
 
Poor Nambia. Sounds worse than our situation. Didn't know that was possible :p Although we do have some hopeful avenues, it appears they do not at this stage.
 
Government involvement in communications invariably leads to one thing - monopolies - which translates into high prices.

I do however remember reading on this forum Namibia's leading us in the cutting of termination rates.

But we lead them in Internet services, even though we have problems.
 
Am I the only one reading that the landing station is in Namibia and not South Africa? I guess I read wrong...but WTF if it is the case!

How come their interconnect charges are 25c a minute?
