Item wanted: Windows XP installation CD / DVD. It must be a legal disc, and you can't be using it at present. The licence key needs to be included.

Is packaging essential?: No, but the licence key needs to be included.

Desired age and condition: Any age - as long as the disc is not scratched - i.e. it still works fine.

Location: Cape Town (pref Southern Suburbs)

Willing to accept a shipped item: Yes

That link is just a clever way of bypassing the system - but it doesn't seem quite legal as you're lying about what version you have right from the start...which I'm not comfortable with. In any case though, you still need a valid licence key at the end of it all - which I don't have. I sadly never kept old XP discs.

THe software is an old game - Brian Lara cricket 2007. The offending bit is the "Starforce" copy protection system, which has been an issue for many others. I've tried many ways of removing or bypassing it, but none works.

So I'm sitting with the legitimate, purchased game - but it won't work on anything other than XP.

Hence my need to get a legit XP disc.

You want to pay for an XP license to play a 9 year old game? seriously?

Yup. I figure it shouldn't be that expensive. And I'm not into more recent games with complicated controls. Classics are my thing :)

But I mean you used to own a copy of XP - you just lost the key - so why the issue with running a copy that has a different key? Why pay again?

I'm a bit of a stickler for legalities...which many people aren't. So to me, I'd rather pay a small amount to get something totally legal - and have peace of mind - than go through the back door.

I'm hoping some hoarder would still have their old XP disc and wants to make a quick buck from it - since XP isn't really useful for most people nowadays.

Maybe you'll get lucky... I threw out some keys a few months ago lol

You played that game before? You can hit like 1000 runs in 20 overs, it's awesome!

Yup. And the fact that I've not really been watching cricket in a decade means that I know all the players from back then...so it's not a guessing game as a newer game would be.

Now if you're talking REAL classics, Jonty Rhodes Cricket from '94...THAT was awesome :)

As I said, phone MicroSoft SA.

I can try, but I reckon they'll try to sell me Windows 10 and give some nonsense story about XP no longer being available - which we all know already. I read somewhere that it was actually illegal for vendors to sell the older operating systems once MS releases a newer one. So imagine me telling this company I want a 15 year old product....

Try, remember they still sell xp for embedded systems.

Remember that you might accidentally buy a copy that is not allowed to be resold... Then what?
Which is the lessor of two evils? Buying another illegal copy? or using a pirate copy after you have already paid for a license?

I thought the Windows XP activation server was discontinued (alongside any updates whatsoever) ?

Tried - and no, they don't sell anything other than the latest. He recommended trying other online outlets - but obviously with the warning that it'd be pretty much impossible to purchase it from any stores these days.
