The number of times the SA postal service decided not to notify me of a parcel - ugh - talk about infuriating!

Well apparently you have to GO to the Post Office and get a slip or something that tells you what's ready for pickup. What the hell is the point of that? I want to be notified BEFORE having to step in to a Post Office, maybe by email or something, is that really so hard?

We get home delivery (once, maybe twice a week ) and thats when they're supposed to deliver the slip. Half the time they deliver it next door and the other half they neglect to put which one of the three local post offices (±15kms) to pick it up from

Yes they're run by some very Koscher guys who don't work on Sabbath.
They will upgrade your shipping from Express Mail to UPS if its a heavy item. Still IEM (EMS) is cheap, fast and traceable, I always order THAT way and stuff gets here faster, if u use UPS they'll charge you an extra R114 for customs clearance.

Amazon shipped me a book and I went to the Post Office 10 days after I placed the order on Amazon.com to find that it'd been waiting there for me for 3 days already, so that's from the States to SA in 7 days flat.

I'm really disappointed that I'm being made to wait a month just for a pair of bloody headphones .

It depends. Airmail US to SA is usually 2 weeks. 7 days flat was too soon I wager. Also USPS Air is faster than DHL Air (not DHL courier), which is what Amazon uses, they use Deutsche Post which is SLOW usually. I also see now that Swedish Post is also used from the US by some retailers but is slow.
