noone, I have noticed that the charge does work, it was also advertised to have a trickle charge via USB. I'm not sure if its the firmware, or what changed, but mine never lasted more than an hour, and 2 days ago, I went on a private wardriving mission (my tower f%$%#$d out, and when in doubt of antenna positioning, go for a drive to test the tower), and noticed my batery never went below 80%. So, it seems to be working.

Sorry guys, I haven't been following this thread since I don't have a laptop. I could have supplied a Kombi (but a bit late for that now). However, if you need camping chairs and tables, just shout. I have six folding chairs and four folding tables - the first is card-table sized and should fit four laptops, the second will take two, and the others are tray-type tables taking one each. No power inverter unfortunately.

I'm tower 50 Northpark Plaza. Some of you should have my number

Rat dude

I don't have the whole day available. Can you call me from the road when you're reasonably close so I can join you for the last few towers?

I remember seeing those inverters in a shop somewhere for a few hundred rand I think. If memory serves, it was Mica in KZN somewhere so they should have it here as well. Maybe at Game or Makro. I know they can be bought but Im not 100% sure where.

I think ellies electronics sell them, I saw one at one of their stands in Mica Rivonia a few months ago,
I gave their head office a call, and the prices vary between R700 through R1300.
but htey only come with bttery clamps. Lucky my battery works(for a little over an hour anyway) but if anyone wants to go pick one up, now you know where !
See you Sunday

quick thought, maybe break the trip up into 2 parts, BL(before lunch) and CL(After Lunch), giving those with battery issues time to recharge and refill their cooler bags !

Coming back from Midrand on the N1 towards Randburg, turn off the Rivonia offramp, turn right and a couple of robots on there's a Keg or something on your left. It's easy and quick to get to. Maybe I can join you there?

You could always stop off at the keg up the road from Radiokop tower. It's a popular Sentech hang out ;-) ...

I'm not sure of the quality, but you can buy 12v inverters here:

http://www.fort777.co.za/

They have a shop in Midrand. There's a small 150W one for R350 here:

http://www.navstar.co.za have a 300W inverter for R395. Pity they are in KZN but basically this means it should be obtainable for a comparable price. Just do a google search and append site:za and you should find something.

Hi ppl
I'll be joining you as well. about the inverters: a UPS is an inverter. I've done it before but DON'T recommend it if you're not technically inclined. Open up your UPS, disconnect the battery and connect it up to your car battery. Or you can buy more of those 12V 7Ah batteries and linmk them up in parallel for longer power output (not more watt, just longer). Please be carefull as your UPS can ALWAYS shock you, Even if it's not plugged in, there's 220v in there (kinda obvious but one tends to forget stuff like that when you unplug the UPS and open it up).

See you all tomorrow.

Hey guys, give us a shout here in the forum tomorrow (granted you find towers with some decent speeds).

Yeha! Wireless <s>BEERFEST</s> testing. lets rock this! It might only be but i'm excited.

This is gona be strange, kind of like an IRC meet (always dodgy) except we have a reason.

Ok, my checklist for tomorrow is:

1 t-rusty honda generator
1 shizer mecer cr-aptop (battery is not charging)
1 My-Direless modem

i will get a few litres of petrol for the genie, also i will try bring some plug boards but i suggest we all try bring one, that way we will have plenty in case.

@everyone - one thing i need to ask you guys (pref the more electricaly minded ones) :

I dont know how stable the genie is in terms of sending a clean signal (read: one with out power spikes and dips)

Is it gona be safe to run a bunch of 'tops off this? The last thing i wanna do is blow anyones precious baby. I've run a tv, dstv decoder and a few lights of the genie before, but never a pc.

@Rodent - what sort of tests are we going to conduct tomorrow?
are we going to do stock bandwidth tests, or do you have something more comprehensive lined up?

Borris......gennie should be fine due to laptops running through a transformer and then only getting a 9-12V power supply

Just went passed the DROS in Randburg and they will reserve an area for us (must confirm with them in the Morning) It is about 800m from Mintek and could possibly allow for connections to Randburg Central aswell.....

Can anyone write a quick app that we can just run when we get to a site that will give us the download speeds that we are getting.....then we can move quickly from spot to spot.(Rodent is that possible)

Oh yeh.....maybe if guys have cantennae's or pringles, bring those with too

See you tommorrow
