Just to warn those who use Uber - the estimates they provide are no longer final. They are now the floor of the price.

If the trip is under the estimate, you will be charged the estimate. If they are over the estimate, you will be charged the higher price.

Where they ever final?
Although the line about if it's under the estimate they charge you the estimate is news to me.
I'll be honest though, never really paid close attention to the costs - the estimate has been typically close enough to the final price for me.

Until yesterday, I had never paid more than the estimated price.

How does the final faare work, is it distance, time or a factor of both?

From Uber:

We understand your concern. With upfront fares, you'll be quoted a fare, rather than an estimated range, before you take a trip. This takes into account all the factors that typically affect the price of a trip, including the expected time, distance and traffic, as well as how many other riders are requesting rides that time and how many drivers are nearby. At the end of your trip, you will be charged the exact amount you saw at the beginning.

However, you were charged an incorrect fare because your driver partner did not follow the preferred route.

We have checked the adjustment in question and unfortunately, this falls within our minimum adjustment limit. This means that we will not be able to adjust the trip for this low-value trip.
We appreciate your understanding.

Questions? Let us know.

How much extra did they charge you?

As mentioned in the OP, from R160 to R169.

So yeah, with no guarantee of a final price and Taxify routinely being a lot cheaper (R135 for the same route), I don't see any advantages in using Uber.

Indeed.

Well ****. R9 rand is the best part of a garage pie. No wonder you had to make a thread about it. I thought this was about hundreds or at least tens of rand.

Its not the amount that matters but the fact that Uber is no longer a guaranteed price.

In one thread, a poster mentioned that he preferred Uber to Taxify because he knew upfront exactly how much it would cost. That is no longer the case.

I also dont get the issue here? An estimate is just that- an idea how much the trip is going to cost.
If Taxify is consistently cheaper then makes sense to use them instead. Do they use an app and give you a final price when you hail a lift?

I think few weeks ago my trip was cheaper than quoted, got a few refunds on my credit card tagged as Uber

Because it used to not be an estimate. It used to be a final price.
